7.62 X 54 for Deer?
I've been transferred to the state of Washington and look forward to hunting there. Since it might be awhile before I can get a 30.06 or .270, would a M-44 in 7.62 X 54 work for the Deer and Black Bear there?

Ditto, the 7.62x54R is between the .308 and 30.06 depending on the particular load. Should be very good on deer. You can also get decent hunting loads from S&B or Barnaul such as soft points up to 203 grains. Good luck and happy hunting[:D]

Have a buddy who has taken several deer with this cartridge out of an old Nagant. Not as glamorous as some rounds, but no less effective. 0 -

That is a great deer/bear cartridge. If you don't have the rifle yet, check with Wholesale Guns and Ammo about an M39. This Finnish variant of the Mosin Nagant is the best ever made, very accurate. You can get a good M39 for $100 to $150. Pick an antique, you won't need an FFL to ship it to. 0 -
[8D] Vassily Zeitsev (probably spelled wrong by me) dropped lots of Nazi officers at Stalingrad with it, as told by the movie "Enemy At The Gates"; it is just as effective for deer since it was heavy enough to be used as a Soviet military and sniper caliber.
