Bast slug gun
I am in the market for a slug gun and would like to know the best one for the money considering accuracy, value and reliability. Has anyone used a Savage bolt action slug gun?

IFLY4U, I have not used a Savage bolt. For the last few years, I have used a 12 Gauge Wingmaster 870 with a Hastings rifled barrel with a muzzle break. It will routinely shoot Winchester Partition Gold slugs in a 3 inch circle at 100 yards.
This year I am switching to a 20 guage Wingmaster with a similar Hastings barrel without a muzzle barrel. Have not affixed a scope and fired it yet but I know it will shoot just as good---and kick less.0 -
The Marlin 512 is a bolt action slug gun with a fully rifled barrel and is as acurate as can be expected with slugs.With sabot slugs it shoots a 5 inch circle at 150 yds. I suggest Lightfield 1 1/4 oz sabots. Gun goes for around $250 out the door,I have heard that the mossbergs are comparable. I still prefer my 870 with a cantalever fully rifled hastings barrel, I dropped a 7 pointer at 168 yds last year with a lightfield slug. Good luck....

It depends on your budget... A pump or bolt shotgun will be the cheapest. An 1100 magnum is a reasonably priced option as is the Benelli Nova and Mossberg. However, I'd recommend a Benelli Super Black Eagle, and get a regular barrel as well and you likely wouldn't have a need for any other 12 gauge. I used to have quite a few and sold ALL of them since it does everything I need it to do. 0 -
I have a couple of shotguns that were made as slug guns - one I like a lot & the other I Love.
Like the Mossberg 695 - The bolt actions (Mossberg, Savage, Marlin) are probably going to be the most accurate. But do you really care about a 1" group vrs a 1 1/2" group. I don't love my Mossy because the trigger sucks, follow up shots are not fast and nobody makes any aftermarket stuff for it or specializes in it.
Love my 11-87 with the cantilever barrel - This gun is awesome. It'll do the 100 yard 1 1/2" groups (Winchester 400 grain Platinum Supreme), follow shots are very fast (you know, for running shots at deer your buddy wounded) and making the trigger great was easy & not too costly (took it out & sent it to Allan Timney). I have never held a better slug gun.
If funds are no issue, the Benelli may offer some kind of advantage. But I never really looked into one because funds do matter and I can't imagine a Benelli being that much better.
Speaking of funds, yes the 11-87 cost twice as much as the 695. But I haven't regretted the purchase a bit.0 -
A winchester 1300 will recoil not unlike a mule. Would not be my first choice a second time.

An 1 1/2" group at 100 yards is plenty accurate for my needs. What is the advantage or disadvantage of a 20 gauge compared to a 12 guage? Anybody used any of the Tarhunt products? 0 -
Tar-hunt shotguns are hands down the best slug guns out there, if you can afford 1-2 grand for a slug gun that is your best bet...

20 G Advantages
1) Less recoil. Maybe. Sometimes 20 gauges weigh less than 12 gauges and the reduction in recoil you thought you'd get doesn't amount to much.
2) Can't think of any more
But really anything you can do with a 12 G, you should be able to do with a 20 G - just not quite as far out. The 20 just doesn't have the oommph that the 12 does.0 -
Most slug guns will be used at 150yds or less...Tar hunt shotguns are about as good as they come. Have used 870's, A5's, and a number of other brands, but the most accurate I've run across is a Bennelli Black Eagle w/slug barrel...it will do 3" groups at 150 yds all day long. Not cheap, but accuracy rarely is.... 0
