    Well, it was introduced in about 1925, and replaced by the model 70 in about 1936. About 50,000 were made, and the 270 was developed by Winchester and introduced with the 54. I'm not sure on current prices, but you should give a little more info like % of original finish, any alterations,bbl length? And most interesting would be a description of what that"something on the side of the receiver I've never seen before" is.Bob

    Lighteningbolt, I will venture two guesses as to what is on the side of the reciever. If it is on the side of the receiver next to where the follower pushes up the cartridges, it is probably the base for a side mounted scope. If it is further back by the bridge, it is probably a receiver sight. One of the most common and probably best receiver sights in the Lyman 48. Receiver sights were popular during the period when the model 54 was in production.
