Scope mount for a Rem. Sportsmaster model 512?
Howdy folks,I'm looking for a scope mount for a Remington Sportsmaster Model 512. Does anyone know of a particular scope base for this receiver? There are 4 tapped holes (2 on each side of chamber) on the left side of the receiver, I want to pass this oldy but goody down to my grandson however the stock sights have no adjustments(other than elevation) and are WAY off.Any and all help would be greatly appretiated,Josey.

Hi Josey- Are you sure that 512 isn't already grooved for 22 tip-off mounts? I just checked mine that my Dad bought new for me in 1961, and it is not drilled and tapped, but is factory grooved. I've had a scope on mine for 40+ years.-Bob

Thanks for replying hangfire, sorry I took so long to reply. On my Model 512 there is only one dovetail over which the stock rear sight was mounted. What I am looking for is a weaver rail that can be mounted into this single dovetail. I am considering buying and cutting down to 4",a piece of scope mount base stock from Brownells and machining it down to fit into the 3/8 dovetail on top of the rifle. I guess I could use the existing rear sight holes for securing it into the dovetail and machine the forward and rear sections of base to hug the barrel. I know I can avoid all this by taking the rifle to a gunsmith a having it redrilled and tapped for a top base mount but I am trying to avoid modifying the original finish of the 512.
Thanks again for replying,Josey

Hey Josey-- Wish I could help you more, but mine has the rear sight on the bbl. My receiver is grooved to accept a tip-off. That Brownell blank stock sounds like a plan I see they have a contoured base blank that would probably fit the Rem. Good Luck-Bob
