S&W 5906 9MM Pistol Magazines
I have both 10 and 15 round magazines for my pistol. Do these magazines actually hold the specified rounds? The reason I ask is that 10 or 15 rounds can fit in the magazine, but then the magazine will no fit into the pistol. I gues it's 9 in the magazine and 1 in the chamber or 14 in the magazine and 1 in the chamber. Also, how are these pistols? Reliable, accessory friendly....etc.... All opinions are welcome. Thanks!!

I'm guessing you might have after-market magazines; although there are some early Smith and Wesson 59-series 14-round magazines.
The quality of after-market magazines can be poor, resulting in situations like that you describe.
I have a 5906, (and the compact model--I'm drawing a blank on the model number) and a Marlin Camp-9. All my factory S&W 15-round mags hold 15 rounds and lock and fire in the guns just fine.0 -
When you say they don't fit, do you mean they don't easily lock in or they don't want to go up the mag well at all? If is the mag locking in that is the problem, try locking the slide back and then putting the mag in. It is just the additional compression that is the problem when you already have the magazine at its full limit. There isn't any more crush room. This is especially common on the 10rd.
If the problem is that the mag physically won't go into the mag well after it is loaded, you have another problem. Does the gun have its original grips? If not, they may be slightly obstructing the mag well and with a slight amount of swelling of the mag being fully loaded with a slightly obstructed mag well, that problem might occur. The original grips are rigid and properly fit the gun. Some aftermarket grips can either fit improperly and/or be pliable enough to flex into the mag well area causing the mag to not easily go in.
There are other possiblities as well, but without further info, that is what I would check first.0 -
I have a Smith Wesson 5906 that has been very good.Its reliability has been flawless and accuracy is very good.It sounds like the piece that retains your mag is bad,will it hold an empty mag but not a mag with any bullets in it or just not when its completely full?There were 5906 with 14 round mags like someone else had stated.I have a earlier (1990) 5906but mine has 15 rounders but doesnt have the accessory rail like the newer ones do.Get the mag problem worked out and you wont be dissapointed at all with this gun.I feel the 5906 is a top shelf pistol and hard to beat.I personally like mine better than my friends Beretta. 0 -
The problem that I'am having is with the magazines fully loaded. For instance: If I use a 15 round magazine and load it to maximum capacity, the magazine will not lock into place. If I want it to work, then I must remove 1 round, insert the magazine, chamber a round, remove the magazine, install another round and then reinsert the magazine. This means I have a total of 14 rounds in the magazine and 1 round in the chamber. The 15 rounds will fit in the magazine, but barely.....like if it's not supposed to. This also goes for the 10 round magazines as well. All of my magazines are factory S & W and work well otherwise. The pistol itself is nice and I have no complaints. I talked to a guy who said that maybe the magazine springs hadn't been broken in yet because of the fact that the pistol had not been fired much. From my understanding, it is a model built in 1995.
