12 guage shotgun
Just brought a 12 guage double barrell shotgun with hammers, looks like it is in good shape. The only name that I can visible see is Russel Arms Co. How can I tell if it is safe to fire or it is worth anything? Never heard of Russel Arms Co. where can I find anything on them? Thanks for anyones help in advance.

Hi, I have a 12 guage shotgun that belong to my husbands father or grandfather and I wanted to know if anyone can tell me anything about it.
The only thing it say on it is Mississippi Valley Arms Company and has the following numbers just behind the trigger. (ZK 782)

A little more about your shotgun.
Crescent made decent quality shotguns under more than a hundred trade names for various hardware store chains, mail-order gun dealers and catalog houses such as Shaplieh Hardware of St.Louis, Townley Metal & Hardware of Kansas City, Belknap Hardware of Louisville, Sears & Roebuck, Montgomery-Ward, etc.
"Hardware Store Shotguns" tended to be of the inexpensive variety, and the Crescent-made guns were of better quality than the average of these guns.0 -
its an old fashioned working mans gun that is for the most part a great tool to do a job with. it sounds it did for many years. have you ever heard of a 'cresent wrench?' that should give you an idea of how reliable your gun was! welcome to the boards. soon, youll be a senior member yourself. btw....its your first post and everyone is saying dont let the trolls bother you. what happened? i dont see any flames. what happened guys?

If it is a Damascus barreled shotgun, it was made for black powder shells only, and cannot stand the pressures developed by modern smokless shells. Do not shot it! Even if you wish to use black powder shells, have it thouroughly checked by a competent smith before shooting. Most are not safe 100 years later.
