Colt 1911 WWI
I've been given a Colt 1911 WWI model. The gun was owned by my friend's grandfather who fought in WW1. It has the original holster w/ US stamped on one side, and Boyt E.T.C. on the other, and it has a leather tassle dangling off the bottom. On the inside of the holster, Mr. MCKeever wrote his name, H.V.B. McKeever, USMCF.
Markings on the pistol are: Model of 1911 U.S. Army, and No 260320 on one side; Patented Apr.20.1897.Sept.9.1902 Dec.19.1905.Feb.14.1911.Aug.19.1913, and Colt's PT F.A. MFG.Co. Hartford,CT.U.S.A. By the trigger, on the same side, is a JM with a circle around it, and a stallion near the cock. There is a small rust spot on the bottom near the clip, but otherwise, everything is in remarkably good condition.
I know next to nothing about pistols. What have I got? Is this a rare gun? What is it's relative value?

There are a lot of variables here, what you have sounds like a nice WW1 vintage gun. The amount of finish left on the gun has much to do with the value, also the original finish is important. There are many things to look at when grading a gun like this so values can range from 500.00 to 3000.00 depending on originality and finish.
Some research and pictures are important go to the 1911forum and follow some links there to see what you have.

I would say you have a very good friend to give you such a gun. I hope you have a safe of some kind to keep it in. Nice guns like that have a tendency to walk off in someone else's pocket. That would be a shame.

COLT Model 1911: Serial Number 260320 Produced By Colt in 1918.
Production Run began with 233601 and Ended at 594000 for that years production run.....Just for your information.....
