RUGER MOD.77 30-06
yes,anybody tell me anything about a ruger mod.77 in a 30-06,or any experience with one versus a remington,is the ruger very accurate,its in fair to better shape.its been hunting, but not abused.no rust,very minor dings on the wood.has no sights but does have scope rings.any gossup would be appreciated.

I won't spread gossip but will share my experience.
My son has a Ruger M77 in 30-06 caliber. I bought it for him 25 years ago. It is the best shooting 30-06 hunting rifle I have ever seen. Will hold 1" groups all day long with several factory loads. If I could find another that was as good, I would gladly pay a premium to get it.

The tang safety ones are more desireable. They have adjustable triggers. The newer ones don't. Rugers don't have a very good resale value compared to a Remington for about the same price. 0 -
I would say if that's the caliber you want and the price is right go for it, around the shops I frequent I would say Rugers are more desirable than Remingtons, but that may not be so in other areas! If it's a tang safety, that's a definite plus IMO. 0 -
what every one else has said go with the Ruger , my 77V in 280 with hold sub 1 inch groups and then some , also have a 77R in 7mm-08 great little gun 0 -
Had a MarkII in .270,Loved it,except for the
3-position safety.Good idea,but never could get
used to it.Very accurate.Had a chance to make money
on it so I let it go.Replaced it with a Browning
a-bolt.Couldn't help it,got the whole rig for what
the Leupold was worth!I'll have another 77 some day,
but it will be the old model with the tang safety.

I have recently started to wring one out. A M77MKII that my wife purchased for me at an NRA dinner. It is also a 30/06. I will say right off,...that I am a 700remington fan,..and have quite a few of them. You will be hard pressed to beat thier accuracy (the 700rem).
That being said,..I have run 20rnds down the barrel,..and cleaned between each shot,..to get the burrs in the bore worked down. The bulltes I used were rem core-lokt 150gr psp. These bullets were grouping in the 1.25-1.5moa range. I can no doubt find a better load,..but I feel that it will not improve by enough to get it much below an inch, I could be wrong. Handloads will be started this weekend.
The feel of the action is strong,..and it has a reputation for being just that. I added some montana extreme bolt grease to the lugs and it smoothed up a great deal. The trigger can be adjusted (on the MK II),...it just has to be done by a REPUTABLE gunsmith. I do like the finish,..as the stainless is bright and smooth on all portions of the barreled action. The 3 position safety on mine in a nice feature, if you are into that type set-up. The blueing on these rifles is also impressive for their price range.
The controlled feed I don't like as much,..becuase the bolt has to be opend with force to get the case to be ejected,..if not it will be left sitting in the follower(factory defect?).
These are my experiences with the one and only M77 I have or have used. If the price for a blued model in the aforementioned condition is at or around $400 I don't think you will be doing yourself any harm by purchasing it. I also put a Boyd laminated stock on mine for $116,..and it makes a very nice addition. FWIW I am liking this rifle more and more,...and for me to not sell it for money to buy another remington is testimony enough.
The barrels are 1:10 twist,...so save yourself some time when buying ammo to test and don't go below 165gr bullets. You would be better served to probably stick with 180gr offerings.

Just c, Could you give me the name of your gun smith that will adjust the trigger on my MKII. I have a RSI in 308, was told my two smiths, I went to locally that they can't be adjusted. I was told I needed to buy a replacement trigger. However I didn't want to spend that much just for a little lighter pull. I do know that some older MKII VT, came with adjustable triggers. 0 -
I have never owned a Ruger centerfire, a friend of mine that can shoot, and goes to Alaska every year hunting has a lot of Rugers, and they all shoot great, he likes the tang safty ones, Their is one for sale at the gun shop I work at part time, It's used and has the tang safty it's a 7mmRem Mag, I have never owned a 7mm mag, but might buy this one. I glased beded one for another friend of mine, I realy like the Flat bottom reciever and the angel recoil lug screw set up. 0 -
martzkj, I asked him about his price,..and I beleive $50 was it. He is 20 minutes from my house,..so getting things to him is easy.
Now,..he stated that he has invented a jig which allows him to polish down the bearing surfaces without over-polishing. He also stated that this a a long process,..and the trigger must be reassembled, and the rifle tested for pull and safety features,..then taken apart and ground some more,..etc etc.
With shipping,..you may be close to the timney range anyway. I have 4 rifles built by this guy,.and he is very talented,. so when he told me it could be done, I took it at that. I havn't sent him mine becuase I figured for another $15 I could have him install a timney for me,.and still have the factory trigger, I'm still tossing that one back and forth. It is not as simple as a 700 trigger,..so the labor is what gets you.
Let me know what you think,..and ifin you are interested, I'll e-mail you his name and number. He is very good,...but he is all custom,...so you may be a while getting it back. You might want to have him bed it at the same time to make the wait worth it.

I bought my first M77 in 30-06 used in 1976. It has served me very well through the years. I also now own a 338 Win. Mag and a 280 Rem. both M77 Rugers.
