Savage Lever Action

I have a Lever Action Savage chambered for .243 Win. The internal magazine holds 6 rounds. What model is this?

  Counter??? I don't think so. The only markings on the gun are the serial number under the receiver and the Savage Arms Westfield, Mass. U.S.A. markings on top of the barrel.Also, .243 Win is stamped on the side of the barrel.

  FrancF means does it have an oval shaped hole in the left side of the receiver which shows a number as each consecutive round is loaded into the magazine.

  .243 was added to their line in 1957. They moved to Westfield Mass. in 1960 (from Chicopee Falls). In 1965, some models discontinued rotary magazine for clip fed and the counter disappeared (except 99E). Safety moved to tang from the lever also. Sounds like you might have one of those.Could be a model 99-C. If it has a rotary magazine but no counter, it could be a model 99-E.

  Mine has the safety on the lever, though.

  Then I think you have a 99-E. It retained the old style lever safety but had no counter.They were made from 1960 to 1984. .243 was added in 1961.
