30-06?

What does the 06 mean in the caliber 30-06? I know this is a 30 caliber rifle but what does 06? Same for the 30-30? I know this is a simple question but I've always wondered???

  I believe the -06 was the year it made it's debut. 1906.

  yep,...30 caliber invented in 1906 by the springfield corp. At least that is the way I have always understood it.
  
  why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

  These guys are on the money on the '06. I think originally there was an '03 cartridge that was updated slightly, different shape nose of the bullet, different powder loading, and I think they went to a jacketed bullet(hence hotter load).
  The 30-30 is a sort of misnomer as it was the first cartridge to be originally loaded with the then new smokeless powder, I think it was also referred to as .30 WCF. Before smokeless powder it would have meant .30 caliber-30 gr. black powder as per other older loading espec. rimmed cases such as .45-70, .50-110 (tho some of the old black powder cartidges didn't hold true to the naming, either). But I don't believe it was ever intentionally loaded with anything other than smokeless.

  The cartridge was originally .30 US. for the Model 1903 Rifle. In 1906 it was modified, approved, and adopted by Springfield Armory (The real government one, not a private enterprise). The cartridge could properly be called US Cartridge Calibre .30, Modified(1906).
  
  The 30-30 was indeed .30 calibre with the equivalent of 30 grains of black powder.

  Skyking.....The .30 US was the cartridge for the U.S. Models 1892 through 1899 Krag-Jorgensen rifles (aka .30-40 Krag). The .30-03 was an entirely different cartridge.

  Xracer, you are correct, I should have been a little clearer that the 30 US for the Model of 1903 was different from the Krag round. Contemporary articles of the time that I have read call it by this name.

  I'm seldom ever able to add to your worldy knowledge of firearms, but thought I'd muddle the issue even further. Until the advent of WWII, the 30-06 was also known as "30 Govm't" - as the caliber stamping on my pre-war (1939 mf'g) Winchester Mod 70 so states!

  1894 and it was never loaded with Blackpowder. Started life as a smokeless powder round. Original bullet was only 160 grains also I believe.

  Thanks aglore. I was talking to a friend about it the other day and he asked when it was made. I knew it wasn't 1930 or 1830 so I thought I had better ask.
