German Mauser (need info)

My uncle gave me a German Mauser when I was in California in 1989. I'm unclear as to how he obtained it. I know a little about it and would like to find out some information on it. Description: 23.62"bbl.(front sight is located at the end of the muzzle),5-shot 8mm Mauser cal.,turned down bolt handle,all part #'s match, The sad thing about it is that the stock has been cut(sporterized) and the handguard is missing. Factory markings: On the top of the receiver marked "1920" below that is a crown crest and "ERFURT" then "1916". On the left side of the receiver marked "kar. 98". There is also a small eagle(left receiver side). On the right side of the receiver there 3 or 4 small markings as well. The stock also has similar markings. As far as condition,it's pretty decent(still functions) considering it has possibly been through combat. I've done some research(bluebook,Numrich,Jack First,etc..)but am not sure if it is what I assume it is (1898 AZ rifle). I'd like to find out it's worth and maybe get a replacement stock to make it cosmetically correct. I can't find a stock anywhere! Hopefully I can get some help.[8D]

  You are correct. It is a 98AZ. It was also part of the 100,000 man German army (Reichswehr) allowed by the Versalle Treaty after WWI as evidenced by the 1920 on the receiver.
  
  The stocks are almost impossible to find. There are a few stock makers that specialize in turning out new wood for old military rifles, but I have no addresses for them.
  
  With all matching numbers, it might be worth buying a $250 junker just to get the wood.

  If what you want is to just get close, not an actual reproduction, then most any stock set for the 23" barrel length will do. There are regular offerings on gunbroker for both new and used stocks. Good luck.
