270 v. 270WSM
I am considering one of these calibers; does anyone have any recommendations when comparing them?

I would go with 270 win just cause thier is more bullets size to chose from. Then you have excuse[;)] to buy the 270wsm when thier is more ammo to chose from. My 2 cents. 0 -
Go with the .270 win.. You will have a wider selection bullets and the recoil is a tad lighter than the .270wsm. I have shot both and to be honest the recoil was brutal in the .270wsm. I hunt with a 7mm mag myself, and I do not consider myself recoil sensitive but after shooting the .270wsm mag once I found myself flinching before firing. 0 -
what are you hunting? How far? and do you handload?
I would go with the WSM,..but I handload,..so that would be a benefit for me. You can always load the WSM down to 270win velocities,..and have LESS pressure,...but you can't load the 270win up to the 270WSM levels.
If you are shooting 300yds and less,...no need for the magnum,..but I would use it anyway,....cause I like em[;)]
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

I would agree with this post. If you are a handloader, the WSM would be the way to go.

I am a believer in the .270 Win., have been hunting with same for nearly 25 years. My choice of rifle is the Remington 700BDL with a Ramline stock, topped with a straight 6x Bushnell Rangemaster scope.
It has been deadly on whitetail with my reloads - 54 grs of IMR4350 under a 130 gr SP. It has dropped deer out to 300 yards. One thing about it, it's sort of like the 30-06 - people usually stock the popular calibers at smaller sporting goods stores and not the wildcats cartridges or odd balls. I compared it to the 25-06 before I settled on the .270 and never though twice about it![:)]0 -

.270 Winchester--Do anything that a WSM will do..that whitetail does not understand ballistics..the WSM will get to the target .00024 seconds before the standard 270 round..Oh, did I mention that whitetails also don't tell time..270 WIN, one of the best around.. 0 -

Yep, just based on the cost and availability of the ammo go with the .270 Win. I doubt there's much real advantage to the Short Magnum anyway. 0 -
Back to the reason I asked how far you shoot,...
magnum= more powder
morepowder= heavy bullets pushed faster
heavy bullets pushed faster= higher impact energy
case and point from the winchester web page

150gr balistic silvertip
muzzel vel-3120fps muzzel energy-3242 ft lbs
500yd vel- 2213fps 500yd energy- 1631 ft/lbs
270win
150gr (BAL SILVER TIP NOT OFFERED)
muzzel vel-2950 muzzel energy-2900ft/lbs
500yds vel-1746 500yd energy-1016ft lbs
even the partition 150gr pill only has 1859 fps and 1152ft lbs at 500yds from the 270 win.
The 270wsm has far and away more power at long range than the 270 win considering equal bullet weights. And,...if you are a long range hunter,..the WSM walks the dog on the 270win. However,..if you are a 300yds and closer shooter,..there will be no difference in the percentage of "dead" between the two calibers.[xx(]
