Smith & Wesson 5906 question.
I have a question regarding a S&W 5906 9mm I purchased and cant find the answer any place.I am wondering if my gun can handle +p or +p+ 9mm rounds?It is a heavy all steel gun manufactured in either 1990 or 1991,I bought it used but it is in excellent condition.I dont want to shoot either round in question for target work,just to make sure they feed reliably and then let them sit in the gun in case I should ever need them but I dont want to hurt my self or my gun.If anyone here can answer this you would put my mind at ease.Thank You.

I sure don't want to open a can of worms, but in my opinion (and many years of experience), +P and +P+ ammo is completely unnecessary for civilian personal defence. There are many good "standard" 9mm rounds made by Remington, Winchester, Federal, PMC, and other major ammo manufacturers available. The standard ammo feeds more reliably than the hot stuff, is more accurate, and is a lot less expensive.
Also, if you are ever involved in a shooting, the investigating police will pick up all the spent brass for evidence. You will then have the opportunity to explain WHY you loaded with "more powerful than normal" ammo.

While the 5906 will handle +p or +P+ ammo, I would ask why use it.
Reminton stadard 9mm ammo with Hydro-shoks will dispatch any assailent quite handily. As previosly stated, the Investigators will pick up spent cases and match them to the gun so loaded. D.A.'s and judges tend to view with distane this ammo in the hands of a civilian. +P+ ammo especially, Since they view this as the LEO communities private stock. Take from me, Post shooting Q&A sessions are not alot of fun. The authorities seem to be looking for ANY reason the rule it a wrongful shooting and hang YOU. I would consider this carefully before loading up a mag full for defense. They WILL ask you to justify the high powered ammo. This might well be a tough sell, depending on the you're location and how conservative or liberal the Judge. I would still rather be judged by twelve of my peers than carried by six of my relatives, but, You must wiegh ammo type verses Justification after the fact. Personally I stick with the standard loading in Hydro-shoks for defense. No gray areas with the nessesity of high-powered ammo. Just my two cents worth.

I personally carried a 5906 for a few years for my Sheriff's Office and we never had any problems with any of the high performance ammo. Use whatever you want. I never had any problems with mine. 0
