7-62x39 question......

Ok ,time to show my ignorance again...I was going to buy some 125 gr. sost-points so ,went looked things up,find in different books 762x39 as .308,.310and .311? Geez...what is the right size to get for my poor lil sks?why the discrepancy.....Its confusing....L.H.

  For a standard SKS you need 7.62 X 39 ammo. The larger .308 caliber is often referred to as NATO 7.62 X 51.

  lh, the bore is .311; there were several companies making 125 gr +/- bullets in this diameter - I picked up a few thousand Winchester slugs a few years back, so I've not kept track of the current situation.

  The correct diameter of the 7.62X39mm and the 7.62X54R bullet is .310, not .311, this is the bullet diameter of the .303 british and the 7.7mm Jap. Usually .308 bullets will give decent accuracy, however there are several bullets in .310 now available for these cartridges.

  Everyone is right.The Hornady manul says .308" to .311".

  I thought this forum was for "experts" who know what they are talking about, not what they think they know. 7.7 Jap and 303 brit use .312(including new production), Nearly all 7.62x54 measures .310(including new production ammo, 7.62x39 runs the spectrum of .308(for some US made new ammo), To .311 (all communist surplus I have ever measured and european New production). Your SKS was designed to use .311 bore ammo. Buy Sellier and Bellot, Lapua, or Norma if you care to send the very best, The Russian stuff is decent for the money. There is the 308 winchester which is .308 bore which is similar to 7.62x51, Not the same thing as .308 bore US made 7.62x39. Don't just throw info out there which could hurt someone. If you aren't sure don't answer the question and muddy us the water!

  richbug,not trying to argue but I don't see were anyone gave the wrong info .308 thru .311 no problems.
