Ammo question,7,62.......is this 06?Help

Found this box of ammo in amoungst some stuff I got...Simply says 1958,20 7,62mm
S-Patronen/GM 1 on the bottom of the casing it says 58 and OJP ? It is jacketed,I assume its 1958 military something,bu buddy says 30-06.....

    From 1958 I would assume so. Measure the case. If it is 63mm long, it is 06. If 51mm, it is .308

    Measure the case for sure as the M14, in 7.62x51mm was adopted in 1957 so would assume there was some ammunition available at the time.

    The ammo in question is .30-06, it is austrian mfg, berdan and non-corrosive.

    Hey Longhunter, another vote for measuring the case.Also, '06 and 308 are about as common as they come, any chance of just comparing the case with known examples of the two ?.Bob

    Guess that would make some sense huh Bob...Seems as I got 3 boxes I wonder why I didn't,just didn't come to mind I guess.See hoe addicting this site can become,1st thing that I thought was,Well I'll just ask em on GB![:D] L.H.

    lh, ammo guy has the X-ring on this one. Many European nations adopted the .30-06 as their primary military cartridge following WW2, until and after the adoption of the 7.62x51. Most notable were Britain, france and Austria. Believe the Norwegians and possibly the Belgians did so to a limited degeree as well. *LOTS* of surplus military .30-06 from the three nations noted.

    lh, the ammo if in real good condition has some slight premium as a collectible.

    Icono, Thanks bud....The ammo is about perfect,the box as well,altough it is 4 rounds short,or was it six..I( don't have it in front of me right now.Anyhow I guess it will just hang in the box as back-up or something....L.H.
