Any California dealers

The firearms consultant
A very good friend of mine passed away and I am trying to help his widow dispose of his firearms( about 60 in all). If she wants to sell the guns as a private party transfer, thru a dealer, does she have to sign each individual DROS for each firearm our can she just allow the dealer to show the disposition in his bound book? She does not drive and traveling back and forth to the dealer would be inconvenient. Thanks, John

    The easiest way would be to either put the firearms up at auction or to consign the entire lot to the dealer for a specified fee. Private party transfers involve both the buyer and the seller appearing before the same dealer to fill out and sign the DROS form before the data is entered in the DOJ data base via computer. Although I am a fully licensed dealer here in California, retail sales are not a major part of my business and my experience with private party transfers has been very limited and in each case very straight forward. 60 trips to the dealer for each DROS seems like a major impact on the life of the poor woman who is already suffering from the loss of her spouse. Unfortunitly if there is a way around this I am unaware of it.

    Once again I feel that in her situation either auction or consignment-- where the dealer takes title to the firearms and then sells them as his own, is her best bet. The only real advantage to a direct private party transfer is to the BUYER because private party transactions do not count against the one handgun purchase per month limit in effect here in California. The other factor involved is that if any of these firearms are handguns and are not on the current approved list then a private party transfer is the only option since dealers are not allowed to make retail sales of such pistols to the public (unless they are C&R or single action).

    I would think that this woman could sell those guns for cash to any responsible dealer. Whe will be offered approximately 70% of the normal retail price. For 60 guns, if decent quality, many dealers will drive to her home and pick them up and pay in cash and give her an FFL. This way if an out of state dealer buys the guns, they will be out of that wonderful "left coast" state and be back in the market. Just a thought, but someone like myself would probably be interested enough to make the trip after receiving a list of what the 60 guns consist of, and this would requirew nothing on her part but have her friend make a list.     Thanks Mark and Bub. We are considering many options including the dealer option. With everything going on her son died three weeks after her husband. We are working on a list of firearms after the family decides if they want any of the guns. I know the AR15 and an M1A will have to be sold out of state because of there configuration. Thanks again.
