Heter's Rifle
I recently found a Herter's bolt action chambered in 264 Win at a pawn shop. The rifle appears to be in very good condition and is mounted with a 3-9x40 scope also wearing the Herter's trademark. The rifles markings indicate it was made it England. Can anyone tell me about this rifle? Quality? Value? I am not at all familar with Herter's making/selling rifles. The dealer only wants $150. Is it worth the money? It is a very attractive rifle. 24" barrel, Monte Carlo stock, etc. Anything anyone can tell me would be greatly appreciated.

Herter's made some Sporterized rifles off the 98 mauser action. Does this one have the mauser type action? $200-$250 in good condition for the mauser actions.

As fast as you can, buy the rifle, if the condition is as you say. It sounds like a $250 rifle to me.

The rifle your inquiring about was made by "BSA Guns Ltd" of Birmingham England circa mid 60's mid 70's. It was known as the "Monarch Sporting Rifle" when sold under the BSA name.
$150.00 for it APPEARS to be a outstanding deal!
Unfortunately it has been my experience when a deal appears to be "to good to be true" it is. I always cast a jaunticed eye on these kind of deals, their always seems to be a kicker on the bottom of the deck, that will come back to bite you!0 -
I have a Herter's XJ-3 from the same time period. Herter's had them made by BSA in Britian and also some were made in Czechoslovakia. They were sold under several model names or numbers with different stocks, Monte Carlo, classic, thumbhole, etc. They were built to compete with name manufacturer's well known models, at a lower price. This was when you could buy/sell rifles mail order. Check it out. If it appears in good working order it probably is. The price is about right ($150-$225 or so). There is no collector market (well, a really tiny one) for Herter's rifles, but they are decent utilitarian rifles. If you buy it and come up with a model number, drop me an e-mail and I will try to send you a photo copy of the catalog page with that rifle. If you don't buy it or pass it on to Saxon, let me know!

As per above a BSA. Action alone is worth the asking price which is possible low due to the caliber which is not especially popular in most areas. Check the bore and throat if possible to get an idea how it will shoot as is, but a bargain even if needing a new tube. 0 -

I've got one in .270 purchased new back in 1969 with special order Douglas barrel and fancy burl walnut stock. Topped with an old Weaver 3x9 scope it is a sub moa rifle with the right loads and has taken dozens of elk, deer, and antelope over the years. I am sure it's not worth it, but if you offered $500 for it, I'd have to turn it down. As I recall, it cost a bit over $200 new back then. 0
