Info on Italian copies of Colt SAA
Does anyone out there have any experiance with Renato Gamba or Uberti copies of SAA? What I want is a copy of a Colt New Frontier. Adjustable sights and case hardened receiver. Also how about having adjustable sights put on a Ruger Vaquero, which has case receiver? thanks! Harry

Shooters have put S&W rear sights on SAAs and it makes a neat installation without altering the appearance much. I don't recall which size they used but they were low profile and didn't require raising the front sight. Case hardening isn't very deep. Gunsmiths either grind through it or locally soften it before milling out the slot.
Altering an SAA like this will improve it as a shooter but will negatively affect its resale value.0 -

Why on earth would you put adjustable sights on a Vaquero??????....when you can buy a BlackHawk........Probable cost $150 to do that and then it lost about half in value because you modified it......so it is then a $200 gun which you spent $150 to modify........I know I'm old and everything, but if I were in that situation I'd trade it in on a new BlackHawk and get the caliber of choice and barrel length I wanted, preferably a 7 1/2 sense I would be using adj. sights and wanted to get the maximum advantage......this my look on it......john....

Yes but.
The Vaquero is a handsome gun because its a takeoff on the SAA Colt while the Blackhawk is plug ugly owing to that ugly bulge in the rear sight area, that dumb square block under the front sight and the squared topstrap where it meets the barrel. One would think that Gaston Glock designed both of them. I own both but certainly not for their appearance.
Note how sales took off with the introduction of the Vaquero.
Its' appearance will suffer little with the addition of an S&W rear sight.
I believe the smaller S&W sights were used in SAA conversions.0 -

I would not screw up the ruger to get minimal gains with adjustable sights, not to mantion the devaluation it will cause the gun. The uberti copies are desent quality and average accuracy. If you want a Colt single action army buy a single action army. Everything else is a copy, clone or re-preduction. There is no substitute for the real thing. You get what you pay for allies here.
It may look like a SAA or frontier/new frontier, but if dosent say Colt,,, it ain't.

I was going through some old records and found a letter reply from Elmer Keith who had done this to the SAA. He recommended Purcells Gun Shop in 915 Main st.,Boise Idaho or Iver Hendriksen, 1211 S' 2nd st in Missoula, Montana. Purcell said he would have to raise the front sight. This was in April 1969 so they may not still be alive or in business. 0
