300 rem ultra mag
The 300 ulta has quite a bit more case capacity than the 300 weatherby.I've shot them side by side with there own factory ammo,180gr through a cronagraph.The ultra was 10 to 35 fps faster.This does't seem like much for the amount of extra case capacity.Do you guys think they will start to load it with some of the new powders like hornady does in there light magnum loads,or is this all they can get out of it.It would seem that it should be possible to get more out of it.I've been told that weatherby loads to higher pressers than other manufactures, but remington has chamberd there gun for the 300 wby.If this is true than the rem. action must be stong enough to handle the pressers weatherby loads to.

The 700 action is more than strong enough for both loadings. I have my 300RUM built on a 700rem action, and it has no problems. I am using a 200gr bullet (for now,..until I go to 220-240gr) and with a 30" barrel I am getting some serious velocity. The factory loadings are loaded down,..as always,..and YES weatherby loads their hot. That is what you are seeing. I know I get 100fps+ better than a 300wthby in the same bullet weight in equal length barrels.
You won't go wrong with either caliber,...but I love mu RUM[8]
these calibers need the SLOW powders to really shine,....RL25, H870, RETUMBO,...etc
another point to consider is the shoulder angle on the weatherby,...being much sharper it creates more pressure,..and therfore per grain of powder will be faster. Now if you were to put an Ackley shoulder on the RUM (300 tomahawk),..you will see the gap widen.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

You need to look at RL25 powder,..that shoves the heavy bullets the best. I am going to throw this out there for you,..and you can shoot it down or take it FWIW. These super-mags were invented to shove heavy bullets,......that being said,..180gr is the very least to put through it IMHO. I'd say go to a 200gr bullet and see what a superb caliber you own.
I am using a 200gr matchking and getting 3200fps from a 30" tube. You will have to figure 150fps +/- less velocity for a 26" barrel. The RL25 and Retumbo are the powders to buy. I have only worked with RL25 so far,..but the 300RUM seems to LOVE this one. I am way below max at 86.5gr and I am pulling down .3moa at 300yds with it. If your rilfe will allow enough H870 without pressure, you can use that one as well. 88.0gr of H1000 is extremely accurate as well,..but at 200fps slower than the RL25.
