Gun blueing and stock refinishing
Have an old remington model 11 that I would like to get back to factory apperance without spending a bundle. Metal in good shape and stock and forend in fair shape {usual crack in forend}. Any leads?

Are you looking to do this yourself? Gunparts corp carries the stock/fore end set for about $150. There are various blueing agents on the market for the do it you r selfers. Some of which, if the instructions are followed and the gun properly proped, produce very nise rresults. If you want factory results, consult Remington or a gunsmith who specializes in older shot gun restoration.

I just now refinished a shotgun barrel using Blue Wonder. See their webpage novumsolutions.com where they show a short video of how it is done. As for wood, I usually strip the old finish with paint remover and then wash with alcohol. When wet with alcohol you will see pretty much how it will look if you varnish it as-is. If you sandpaper it, be sure to do it with the butt cap on. Otherwise it leaves a rounded edge on the wood where it meets the butt cap. If you want a darker wood, use Fiebings leather dye medium brown color. If that is too light, add a little of their black to it and try again. If it becomes too dark, you can lighten it a bit rubbing with alcohol on a rag. Do your wood refinishing before you do your metal refinishing. Final finish can be any number of kinds of varnish. You may want put on several coats and rub down between. Lately I have been using water base polyeurethane. Tough and dries in about two hours. As with anything you try for the first time, try it all out on scrap to get the hang of it to keep from screwing up your first gun job. 0
