C&R License ??
What is involved in getting a C&R license and what guns does it qualify a license holder to purchase?

Process is fairly simple; obtain forms from BATF; get fingerprinted, send notice of application of your local Chief, Law Enforcement officer, enclosed $30.00.
Guns that are over 50 years old are usually designated as C&R. There is a list at BATF that you can download that identifies guns and types.
Problem: Since you can get guns without going thru your local FFL, you just might start to purchase more than you ever thought you would. [:I]

You should also be aware of the fact that state/local law takes precedence over the C&R license. So, if your state requires that all handgun transfers go through an FFL, you can't use your C&R to obtain handguns.
To expound on what Hairy said, any gun over 50 years old is considered a C&R, regardless of whether or not it is on The List. The List specifically identifies many guns > 50 years old, plus some guns < 50 years old. A C&R military firearm must be in its "as issued configuration", or it is no longer condsidered to be a C&R; by the same token, a receiver or barreled action can never be considered a C&R, since "no one collects receivers".
There are some guns on the C&R list that defy reason: The 9mm Makarov is a C&R, but the same gun in .380 is not. The Russian SKS is a C&R, but not the Chinese, Yugo, Albanian, or any other SKS. Some US commemoratives are on the list, others are not.

On this site it pretty much sums up the entire process, there is no fingerprinting for a C&R.

The first rule of thumb on what is a C&R gun is the 50 year rule, followed by the ATF list then would come new additions made by ATF after request made by museums and collectors.

Guns don't have fingerprints; they have signatures that can be changed in a moment.0 -

I just called the BATF and thay were very nice and sent me the application. I filled it out. Took one copy to the Shireff and sent the other one back with a check for $30.00. I never had to be finger printed.

Slight correction needed. The Yugo SKS is C&R eligible. No fingerprints needed. A C&R is an FFL(03) so your state had better make it clear which FFL cannot accept handguns. They may require it to go through an FFL in "business". C&R cannot ship handguns through the USPS as they are not "in Business" as required by Postal Regulations to send handguns via USPS.

Correction to my remarks: I applied for my CR FFL and a carry permit around the same time; the carry permit required my fingerprints. Thanks everyone for correcting that misstatement.

One of the documents that you will receive a short time after you get your license is titled "Firearms Curios or Relics List". The latest printed edition is uptodate as of 2001. However, firearms are being added to the list yearly so also check the ATF website www.atf.treas.gov, There is a place on the opening page concerning C&R's. Incidentally, The Albanian SKS is now a C&R according to the web site................Hondo 0 -
