Clean it regularly(every 100 rounds or so), don't shoot it till it's red hot. Try not to put over 1 mag thru it before you cool it down. A hot barrel shot repeadly will wear out much faster than a cooled down barrel. You should shoot at least 500 rounds thru the rifle before you know you can trust it. Make sure you hit what you are amin' at all 500 times too, just don't hold it on your hip and blast away. You'll be a better shot, and you will know your rifle better than your wife or girlfriend[:D][:D]

I've had best luck with the voodoo method I learned here on gunbroker. It requires sacrificing a chicken before shooting, then requires that you shoot one shot, clean the barrel, shoot 2 shots, clean barrel, shoot 3 shots and clean, shoot 4, and so on till you reach shooting 20 shots in a row before cleaning the barrel. At this point you must spin in a circle 6 times. Make sure you put the gun down before spinning! Always remember gun safety. Then start over with same process. You will need 2 chickens & 398rds to do this correctly. Once this is done in the above sequence your barrel will be broken in.

There is also the Satanic Method, but I here most Christian Churches & public ranges frown on it. Something to do with pouring salt in the shape of a pentagram on the ground, then laying naked in the center of the pentagram while firing.

By the way Eutaw, welcome to the board.

This kind of mouthy, trollish crap I expect from drobs, but Dano.... I'm truly disappointed. The man has a new gun and wants to get the most out of it, asks for some advice and gets this typical nonsense!
For crying out loud, if you don't like the question, scroll to the next one! I thought this was an "Ask The Experts" forum not "Who Has The Smartest A**ed Remark" forum.

There are a lot of varying opinions on break-in procedure and if there truly is any benefit. Check out Kreiger Barrels' web site. They have a suggested break-in procedure for their target grade barrels. On a service rifle such as yours you may perform the suggested break-in to a 'lesser degree'.
