ship a handgun?

My son is in another state (NC) and i gave him a SW40P to do some shooting. The gun is in my name. can he simply fedex the gun back to me or do we have to go through a FFL holder?

  Well, if you want an official document stating that what you have in mind is legal, you're going to have to write BATFE & give them all the details.
  
  I'm no lawyer, and I'm certainly not a BATFE employee, but I took a look at the Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide (ATF P5300.4), page 50, "Section 178.30 Out-of-State disposition of firearms by nonlicensees.....Provided, That the provisions of this section:....(b) shall not apply to the loan or rental of a firearm to any person for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes." This sounds to me like it would be OK for him to ship directly to you by FEDEX or UPS. (Of course, he would have to declare it as "firearm for repair", and ship from a company customer counter.) But, like I said, that's just my opinion, & I'm no authority.
