Federal Premium 180 Gr. Nosler Partitions work good in my gun but each rifle shoots different weight bullets and brands better than others. You have to shoot a couple of different brands and weights to determine which one shoots the best in your own gun. You also have to determine what level of accuracy is acceptable for you. I can shoot sub minute groups at 100 yards with my Browning w/Boss but for bears I could probably accept 1.5 inch groups realistically. You have to know what you are capable of in range and stick to that range. Your 300 will have enough energy at 400 yards but you may only be able to be accurate out to 250. There are so many variables that come into play.

I know this response is a little off base but these are considerations that you have to weigh.

Try the Winchester 220 silvertips for bear, or if you can find them, the 180gr. Failsafe of the same brand.
If you reload; the Nosler 220gr. Partitions are my first choice for dangerous game, elk, Mountain Lion, Barbary & Bighorn Sheep. They carry enough energy out of a 24" barrel to cleanly take deer over 300 yards away, if you do your part. Try H1000 or Imr4350 or Reloder22 with Federal Gold Medal primers; they've always been consistent in my 300's.

my personal choice for bear in .300 WIN. MAG. would be REMINGTON PREMIER SAFARI GRADE .300 WIN. MAG. 200 GR SWIFT A-FRAME PTD SP. with the nickel plated cases. 95% plus wieght retention, 2X caliber expansion, hot solder core bonding. it shoots 1.5" high at 200 yds. 2900 FPS, 3600 FT. LBS.

it is a bit pricey, however. best regards, mike.

Unless you are after exceptionally large black bears, I think the Nosler partition or Swift a-frame will give you better results than the failsafes. I'm basing this on bullet performance on elk. Most any good 180 grain bullet with exit on a broadside shot on a 250# bear.
