Enfield .303
I'm trying to look up the history of an Enfield .303 rifle that my father-in-law has given me. Like who it was isued to(asuming that it's military) and such. Can you help me find a starting point?

Welcome to the Forums: Gonna need a little more information...Are looking for the Country to which it was issued, The Batallion it was issued to, Company, Platoon, Squad...? Which is going to almost impossible...Or are you just looking to see the where, when and Why of your particular Rifle?....Gonna have to have some more info from you before we can even begin to start...Gonna have to have every letter, Figure and Number on the Butt Stock and Fore Stock, Barrel, reciever, Butt Plate. ...Every Proof that is on the gun and where located...Barrel length, Sights, Every scrap of info you can see and forward to Me and the Members of the Forums who will Hop onboard as the Wagon go's by...I/We await your pleasure.......Best....

Thanks for the quick reply. Sorry I was so vague. I would like to know who it was issued to and where, what wars or battles it's been in, anything I can find really. I'll start with the barrel. Along the left-hand side it has SANTA FE JUNGLE CARBINE MK1 MOD I20I1 GOLDEN STATE ARMS CORP PASADENA CALF. A third of the way back on the top is four letters in a square, S G H V. At the base of the barrel on the left side there are several markings. The letters SA on top of a 57 with a line between them. There is a .303 and 2.222", and below that 5 TONS PER. Around all that there are what appear to be 4 stamps. One has what looked like a crown over the letters GRI over two crossed flags with the letter P between them. Another has the letters BNP and above those letters is a symbol I can't really make out, but it's might be the same crown as the other stamp but much smaller with lines under it. These two stamps are also on the left side of the next piece of the gun. (I don't know much about guns, but it's the piece with the bolt in it) The next stamp looks like to crossed swords, handle up, with the letter M on the left side and B on the right and the number 5on the bottom with a dot between the handles. The last one kind of looks like a star with 3 circles to the right of it. On the right side of the base of the barrel is the number 19789 with an F underneath it. This is also on the next piece of the gun. It also has what looks like the letters IS over 33. On the other end of this piece, the end with the handle of the bolt, on the left side is the letter D at the top. Lower on that side is a large L beside a smaller C above the letters CC. On the right of this piece is a line over the number 57. It looks like there was something above the line but I can't make it out. (It kind of looks like the very bottom of an A, but can't be sure) On the piece of metal that goes down the left side to the trigger is the safety. On the safety is the roman numeral 3. Below the safety is stamped ENGLAND. On the metal piece going down to the trigger on the right side is a detailed crown above the letters G.R.I above ISHAPORE above 1941* above No.1 MK III. At the end of the bolt itself is what could either be a bow or a pare of scissors. The front side of the bolts handle has the letters T A and another mark I can't make out. The back side of the bolts handle has the numbers 19789 F and two crossed flags, along with the letters IS over the number 230. The stock is wood with no markings. The butt plate is rubber with the stamp from WHITE LINE, Pachmayr Gun Works, LOS ANGELES 15, CALIFORNIA U.S.A. It's got peep sights on the barrel. And the barrel length is 19 3/4 inches, (I think. I'm not sure exactly where the `barrel' stops.) I hope I wasn't too hard to understand. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

One thing I'd like to make a remark about is Golden State Arms in Pasadena...As a Young Man in the Gun Business it was neat to do Business with that group...They had Broom Handle Mausers Enlayed in the Side Walks around the Outside the Store...and Buckets of Bayonets and Stocks...Barrels of Enfield Rifles and Carbines...This was in the Mid 60's...California was nice place back then.......

Since we aren't over the ten replys: I went to the quartermaster school at Ft Lee, Va in 1956. I was in Petersburg Va one day and went into a gun shop or pawn shop, don't remember, but they had a barrel of lugars at $30 each, take your pick. Brings tears to my eyes now. Tom

Hey Capt- We probably saw each other a few times at Golden State. My Dad used to take me there about once a month.Don't you wish you could find a store that had those racks of Lee-Medfords, Peabody-Martinis,all the different Mannlichers and the endless selection of Mausers?I still have all the dozens of bayonets I purchased over the years.I'm glad I bought my Martini Cadet in 310 instead of the rechambered 32-20's.I bet you went to the Disneyland GunShow as well.Later-Bob
