    wm69--This is only a guess but,i own a couple of 11-48's.when i got them both the stock bolts were slightly loose.I always remove the buttplate and snug the stock bolt.No cracking problem yet.Maybe i have just been lucky,but i do believe a loose bolt would contribute to cracking.

    That makes since. I want to get a nice fiddleback stock (forend on one is very nice!) and I don't want it to crack from shooting. What about, just to be safe, glassing the inside of the stock (probably be hard, but not impossible)? Would that strenghten it any? Oh, and thanks for the reply..

    I guess there is no way to be sure the stock will not crack.I believe the recoil action of the 11-48 is the real culprit.I do think keeping the stock bolt tight will help but it's still a gamble.
