Scope Question for Air Rifles
I am continually told that the only scope that one should put on an air rifle is one made for air guns. Something to do with the direction/mode of the "recoil". It doesn't make a lot of sense to me; I would figure that a scope able to handle the recoil of a magnum rifle, or even, something like a .243 or .308 would be sturdy enough for a 1000 fps Gamo air rifle. Can someone shed some light on this issue?

Yep! That is very true. The recoil from a spring or gas operated air rifle will eventually ruin a normal rifle scope. I don't have the technical terms for it but apparently the construction of air gun scopes allows them to withstand this recoil. In the past Leupold claimed that all of its scopes were air gun rated. I'm not sure if this is still the case. Some air gun makers even offer dampening mounts to help reduce this recoil effect. You can buy a nice Burris (Trophy or Banner) air rifle scope with air gun range (ie 10 meters) focus qualities for a lot less than it will cost to repair the high end rifle scope you might be tempted to install on you air rifle. That being said, I have run a Vari X III 2.5 x 8 on my 22 Cal. Theoben for over three years now without a hitch. Remember that is a Leupold. Buy an air gun scope . . . save yourself the hassle. 0 -
It's called a harmonic frequency that the spring gives off when the gun is fired. I learned that hard way, years back [8]

Reticles shear, lenses move, and inner components fail for basically one main reason.
Due to the violent abrupt forward & backward motion of the spring or plunger-piston.
Think of sitting on a rocking horse, but INSTANTLY changing direction at about 25+ MPH.
Shift a transmission from F to R a couple times.
How long do you think your neck, or tranmission will last???
That's about what happens to the insides of the scope.
Vibration will also ruin a scope, it is more along the lines of a material or fastener fatigue factor.

The advantage of course is that an air rifle scope will handle most anything a big rifle might put out. Had some Beeman scopes at one time and they were really great.
