value used optics
I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what the value of a used Leopold scope is compared to the "new store" price. The rule of thumb I use for anything used is usually 50% of the new price and up. On occasion, giving consideration for exceptional condition and age, I will sometimes go up to maybe 70% or so but after that it's usually worth it to just buy new instead and have some peace of mind.
The scope in question is one of Leopolds top of the line and very desirable with a few small dings on the windage mount. Any insight would be appreciated because I don't do a lot of "wheeling and dealing" with guns and stuff. Thanks in advance.

what does top of the line mean?
vari-x III?
MK IV?
vari-x III, LR?
Vari-x III LR, M1?
vari-x II?
vxII?
The model and magnification range as well as the reticle type would be helpful.

Leupold's are the exception to the rule. Because of their high quality, and because the factory will usually repair their scopes without charge, the resale prices tend to be relatively high.
I don't think 70% of the "new" price is out of line.

70-80% of the new price is the asking price I usually see. A lot of guys will dicker some, if you are not buying on a reserve auction, so you can generally get them at 65-75%. Newer, higher priced scopes and scopes in like new condition will be at the top end of that range, and offer sellers are not willing to dicker.
Burris and most of the high end European scopes sell in about the same percentage range.

Thanks for sharing your experience everybody, that is what I was looking for.
I guess I will brace myself for the 70-80 % range.0 -
You can figure on paying on the high 6's to mid 7's for that scope.
I have one,..and wouldn't let it go for less,.....super scope!!!!
the M1 turrets are a super nice addition to an already sweet piece of glass. I have the 8.5-25x50 with the mildot,...payed high 8's if I recall correctly.
