Bolt won't Open

My Father bought a Winchester Model 70 30.06 about five years ago. A friend of ours helped him get it set up, fire a few rounds thru it, cleaned it, and then it was put in his gun safe. He took it out two days ago just to check on it, that's when he asked me if I knew how to open the bolt on it. I had never looked at it before and after hours of looking at it, gave up. We were told that it was probably rusted and to give it a good "whack" to break it free. There isn't a bit of rust on this gun, and looks brand new. We took it to a supposed gunsmith and after ten minuets couldn't figure it out either, but if we left it with him for a couple month he "might be able to figure it out". I am not into bolt action rifles and if my seventy year old father forgot about some lock on it, you've got me. Any help would be much appreciated.

i had what sounds like the same problem as yours , the pin that holds the bolt head on the bolt body sheared in half , bolt body would rotate but the bolt lugs stayed engaged , if so good luck

If I had the problem, I would try putting a small diameter wooden dowel rod down the barrel and try a gentle tap with a mallet. The dowel would be small enough in diameter to fit into the case mouth and rest against the bottom of the case. Of course, make sure the bolt handle is up when doing this.

If that didn't budge it, I would call Savage and see what their service reps would suggest.

    My humble 2-cents worth,

It sounds like the locking lugs section of the bolt wont rotate to unlock. This means the barrel has to come out and the locking lugs disengaged from the front-a factory job.

you should be able to feel the locking lugs unlock if they are rotating with the bolt. If you feel them rotate upwards,..and unlock,..but the bolt won't budge rearward,...SMACK IT with the palm of your hand. You may have a case that was weak and has overexpanded or was overcharged. Was the bolt handle tough to get lifted when it first happened?

If the bolt handle was normal in it's lift,..I would say that the other members are correct,..as I have no specific savage experience.

But I did have an overowrked case in my 300RUM in a 700 rem that needed the smack to get it out. I threw the rest of them away and went to new brass.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
