body armor ?
Been thinking about buying body armor / bullet proof vest. Especially with all this DC crapp. I think it is still legal at least in Illinois? Anyone know anything about these Nantucket vests sold on GB? I do know that you need at least Level IV to stop rifle rounds & flack jackets are useless without a balistic trauma plate. I surprised we don't see DC goers buying this stuff up.

i have 2 Protective Materials Co. vests. they make military body armor. I have their PS930 ranger body armor, dated 1994 and need to know what I have, threat level wise and its value - it has the front and rear trauma plates that are a kevlar and ceramic combination. are these level 3 or 4? it says on the inside that it stops up to a 30 cal ball & it weighs in at about 40 lbs. email me if you know anything like what level it is and a value (one is in good used cond. and one is like new - one is med. and one is large) - gichaeljor@charter.net

Seriously though, since they were made in '94, there is little to be gained trying to sell them as new (no matter what they look like).
The trauma plates (funny name- the plates themselves cause trauma to your toes if not careful)bring up a question; you say they're some blend of ceramic and Kevlar? Supposed to stop .30 ball? Maybe they would if used in conjunction with the "vest", but I wouldn't bet my life on 'em.
As far as level assignments go, they're probably a IIIa without the plates, maybe a III with 'em. Level IV stuff is pretty well restricted to LEO's and military, so if you've got 'em; better be one of them!
A good quality modern vest like the Second Chance Monarch can go as high as $1800 or so, depending on your size, what carrier, etc.; and has the added benefit of being UNUSED.
The problem with armor is that the next buyer doesn't know if it was abused, washed with bleach, folded for an extended period of time, "tested" in some fashion or other, or what its' particular history was. They might make cool keepsakes, but someone would have to be two dogs shy of a litter to buy 'em used.

I read somewhere, that if it's Kevlar - it absorbs the moisture from sweating, moisture from rain - into the Kevlar fibres themselves.
This will over a period of time, deminish the vests protective abilities. Loosing up to 40% of it's ability to protect.
A material like Dyneema, doesn't take the same wear and tear

rambo rebel-Be aware that Kevlar isn't warrantied by DuPont beyond 5 yrs.
HappyNanoq-Normal sweat and rain doesn't cause degradation of Kevlar. However, if it's completely soaked, as in submerged for a prolonged period, it can lose up to 40% of it's capabilities. Once it dries out the properties are regained.
The big problem is with mold/fungus on the material if it's soked frequently and doesn't dry properly. This can be seen as discoloration on the fiber. That's one reason I liked the clear covering that Second Chance used on their panels.0 -

All your points were excellent, gunnut, but the sentence above would seem to imply that it is somehow illegal for someone to own Level IV armor. The only restrictions I'm aware of are voluntary by the manufactures--there are no laws (aside from--I'm sure--some state laws in areas with strong anti-self-defense sentiments) prohibiting a private individual from owning any level body armor he can afford.
That said, the voluntary restricted sales might mean that the "original source" of Level IV body armor available for sale to the public generally, could have been stolen from the military or a police dept.0 -
Level IV plates are easily purchased right off the net, by anyone.
California has a law that convicted felons are not allowed to possess/wear body armor.
Federal legislation has been introduced to make that same law nationwide, but sofar as I know it has not passed yet.
