Rust Removal

I just picked up a couple of older progressive reloaders. One is a Star in 44mag and the other is a Size O Matic 800B in 12ga. They both have some rust on them that I would like to remove. Is there anything better than steel wool and gun oil. How about the Rust/ Blue remover I have seen in the gun cleaning products. Any help would be great.

  Is there a way to remove rust from a blued gun without doing more damage?

  Have you considered taking your barrel to your local automotive machine shop and having them soak it in their hot tank? These things are filled with Hydrochloric? acid and will remove everything that is not iron or steel.

  How about Blue Wonder cleaner? I know it does a good job on light to medium rust. Conceivably multiple treatments would do the trick?

  try this web site. Someone here turned me on to RB-17. Took off some medium style rust really quickly.

  Sorry Jeff, but this project is not worth doing.
  
  Rust doesn't form ON something, it is a chemical reaction that takes places WITHIN the object. Rust is a compound formed from iron and oxygen (ferric oxide); it represents a breakdown in the iron (or steel) of the object. Remove it, and you will be inside of the barrel, and then all you will end up with a rough piece of scrap.

  Get Naval Jelly at any hardware store. With anything I use for the first time I try it on a small un-important area till I learn how it is going to work. I recco the same to you. Hope this helps.

  Brownell's-Steel White
  Removes the rust but will not attack the parent metal.

  Thanks for all the response guys. I guess the first thing I need to do is to determine just how much damage has been done. I guess I would rather have a rusty barrel than no barrel at all!

  Blue Wonder is a great product but expensive and in my experience best suited for jobs like bores and outside where there is a mix of blue and light rust. Naval Jelly is a cheap crude product more suited to the heavy rust removal jobs. I have used lye water boiling parts where it removes light rust leaving a believable patina. As with anything new to you, try it on scrap first.

  Common "Rust & Blue Remover" will do fine. "Birchwood Casey" can be found at any viable Gun Store.about $4.00

  Since my post yesterday I traded for a very far-gone rusty piece. I'll post my rust removal adventures with it in a few days.
