Winchester 1400 problems?
Has any one had or heard of problems with Winchester 1400s not closing all the way shut when a second round is chambered? Mine is acting up so I throughly cleaned it, even took it completely apart except for taking the bolt out. Do these guns have a history of a wear problem? Mine is probably 14 to 17 years old. 12 gauge also. Any help or advise would be appreciated.

JJ, my brother-in-law has used his for at least 12 years (that I know of) without any trouble and that includes a LOT of duck hunting. I do know his is the Mark II series and has a 28" WinChoke setup so it was made after 1973. I haven't ever heard of any real problem with them.
I've got a couple questions for you... Does it exhibit the same behavior if you load the first shot from the magazine? Have you made any ammo change (short to tall brass or vice-versa?)
Back to your question, it has been quite a while since I've personally been in the 1400, but it sounds as if you've got a weak action spring. I'd first check it, clean it, and oil it and see if that alone helps any. If not, I'd be tempted to double check the bolt.

These 1400's were great guns, they have a real nice feel to them and seem to point naturally. Another feature I liked about them is their safety location. I guess that might have became a liability by now as I could see them getting bumped off easier, but it sure was convenient. I think thier main disadvantage was the short 2 round magazine.

Checking the spring and bolt then cleaning all throughly was my first course of action. I tore the gun down till all I had was the receiver and the bolt in it! I could not get the bolt completely out but it seemed to function fine. The spring looked correct and after a good cleaning with a brush and cleaning solvent, I oiled all parts pretty good. As to the first round not chambering, once in a while you have to push the bolt handel forward approx. 1/8 of an inch to fire. I am now checking if it only does it with the Winchester loads. The federal loads were chambering fine. I took it to a NWTF Jakes event for the kids to shoot and after 20 or so rounds I noticed the trouble. We had Winchester loads. I had shot some Nobles in it first with no problems. I will test it out on Thur. at the 4-H trap practice to see if what I did helped. This 1400 was bought new in the early 1980s by me and it has the premium grade wood as well as the winchoke system. Thanks for the info. 0 -
check the length of the action spring against a new one. sounds like it has lost its bo-ing-bo-ing. 0
