Shipping Model 1927-A1 Thompson (Semi-Auto)
I bought a "Commando" model 1927-A1 shortly after KAHR (KAI) took over.
The dimwits used red "lock-tite" to secure the compensator to the barrel although it is threaded. Well, some rapid-fire heated the lock-tite nicely and the compensator began to unscrew.
I just recently got around to calling them and telling them what happenned. I had the thing for quite awhile before I fired it or noticd the barrel was not pinned. They said they just started pinning them about a year ago..unbelievable! Jeez! Well, I have to give them an "A" for offerring to pin it for me at no cost.
I decided to let a gun dealer in the area ship/receive the repair for me since I won't be there to sign likely. He started at about $20 for shipping on the phone. I dropped it off and he called and said it is so HEAVY it will probably be $60!
I know the guys time is worth something, but another $40? What do you make of this? Does it sound out of line? It's taken me this long to send it and I hate to take a step back over a few bucks, but I hate to be too easy.

You don't need a "Gun Dealer" ( FFL Licensee ) to ship a Rifle or Shotgun back to the manufacturer for repair.
You can ship it yourself through the USPS (Priority Mail). Heavy weight firearms are expensive though. Last time I shipped one it cost me over $26 including insurance.
The cost is based on the zip code your shipping to, also weight of package and amount of insurance required.0 -
Well, I just shipped a 14 lb rifle half way across the country by UPS, and, even with a lot of insurance, it still cost only $14. I can't imagine that yours would cost more than $20.
I guess that the store needs to make SOMETHING on the transaction; after all, he has to complete an entry in his bound book (maybe 5 minutes worth of work). I would think $10 would be enough to charge for that. On the other hand, he really should open the package to verify the serial # & other data on the gun, and then re-seal it, so maybe if he does it the right way it will take him 10-15 minutes & a $20 charge would be fair. But $60 including UPS charges? I don't think so.

If they are only going to pin the barrel why send the whole gun. I would take everything off I could. Also less likely to be stolen since it could not be used as is. Tom
