reloading scale expert needed

what exactly is a magnetic damper and what is the theory involved. how are the magnets installed--to repel each other or attract each other. if you can help i would greatly appreciate

  Cody, The magnet slows the oscillation of the balance bar, so the scale steadies up quicker. John

  You young whippersnappers don't realize how good you've got it.
  
  When I was your age, we used a reloading scale with an OIL damper: we had to fill a small cup on the scale with oil so that a vane attached to the balance beam was immersed in the oil to slow the oscillations of the beam.

  ok now i know what it does, now how are the magnets installed? any one know for sure. rcbs customer service does not or wont bother to find out. they are good on customer service hype but short on results. they said call ohaus whose # is constantly busy. someone in this forum must know and i want to reassemble my scale--the right way.

  The magnetic field between them supposedly slows the movement of the arm. This is on the RCBS 10-10 scale.

  The magnets in the 10-10 scale are installed to attract each other.

  If you take 2 cylindrical magnets 1/2" dia. and .200" thick, place a lead sheet .075" thick between them, the force on them to attract or repel seems to be the same.
  I would guess that the power to dampen the beam would also be the same.
  
  What scale are you trying to resurrect?

  Oil Dampened is fine, but can get a little messy,(if you knock the Scales over), The Oil to use is Pure Glycerin. Oil Dampened stops the same place everytime, (have you experenced over loading the scale cup, if the scales goes from the Top down instead of the Bottom up to your point of desired weight: It can read a few 10ths difference.)[;)]
