Japanese colonial swords:

Any one have knowledge of the prices of colonial swords? both have the cords and appear to be of same pattern but are of different age,

  Jody,
  Colonial is not a word normally applied to Japanese swords. There are Shin Gunto's that were made outside of Japan during the war. Are these the swords that you are referring to? There were also diplomatic swords, some with ancesteral blades and some with Shinto blades that were carried to aquired territories. Can you supply a photo or an extremely detailed description?

  Gentlemen:
  The type of sword I am referencing is not the familial "Samurai" type. These two that I inquire of are commonly known as "Parade sabres", they were issued juniour grade officers, police, often in colonial areas, (Taiwan being one example) they have cast brass guards and chromium plated blades and sheathes. You may find an example at Richard Steins Japanese Sword web site, under the title of military swords of WWII. One of these is older than the other, and of better quality, I am to sell them and was attempting to get an independent opinion as to price. The prices quoted by those in the "business" are sometimes tainted.

  These are very inexpensive. Generally less than $200.00 all day long. Not really even considered a proper Japanese sword. If you check some of the auction websites where they sell (verses just listed for outragous money and receiving no bids), you will get a idea. I'm surprised Richard is even listing them now. Fuller's MILITARY SWORDS OF JAPAN also has a very good timeline and history of them (best book of it's type on the market). Regards

  Thank You, I suppose I shall have to do a penance,as I have tentativily sold them to a collector from N.Y. for $800.00, both swords have the "Bring Back" papers and a brief history of the officer that brought them home.

  I hope he got a kiss too! You did outstanding for what they are. Even with bringback certification, they don't fetch anywhere near that. If you want to do penance, buy that fellow a good reference book, sounds like he could sure use one.
