Is he a modern gunsmith or one from the 1800's....?

He is from the 1800's I think ca. 1850's, but that is a guess.

My database shows NO Syms, listed as a gunsmith from New York...Not saying there was'nt..! Just that after looking thru the database and thru 1/2 dozen Books the only Thing I can locate is a J.C.Symmes of Watertown, Massachusetts. Maker of Symmes breechloading Carbines, patented Nov. 16, 1858, No.22,094. The purchase of 200 or less, Symmes carbines at $40.00 each was authorized as early as July 18, 1855. Ordnance Department correspondence of March 4th. 1857, shows that 200 were ordered April 12, 1856, and 20 were delivered at the cost of $804.50...Sorry I can't be of any further assisstance..........There were a lot of Old Gunsmiths that were BLACKSMITHS, and only made a very limited amount of Rifles ...and never reached the stage where they were Noted or Named, known only to the General Population in the area in which they resided..........Maybe someone out there can shed more light on the subject....I wish You Well.....

Found a couple of listing for Syms, information is sketchy? He is listed as "J. G. Syms" or "J. C. Syms" a gunsmith/ dealer from New York City. His name has been associated with Deringer type pocket pistols. 0 -
Rufe-Snow did a better job than I did...Never thought to look at FLAYDERMANN'S catalog...Did'nt stop to think that it Might have been a Hand Gun....Good Call R-S......
