In your opinion

I want a rifle in no larger than .308 or smaller than .223. Fairly accurate, at least 20 round mags, and I don't really want to pay more than $400. Recommendations please.

    Check out a Russian SKS. Should be able to find one for less than 275. Plus, there's about as much crap out there for an SKS as there is for a ruger 10/22.

    It would be easier if I knew what your intentions for use of the Rifle.The 7.62x39 feels the gap but I would choose a .257Roberts or something similiar.It would work on varmit as well as whitetails.

    Get an AK or a Cetme. They are both rough looking pieces of crap, with shoddy workmanship and cheap looking finishes, and both are around $300. They are both reliable, pretty accurate, and have cheap mags and decently priced surplus ammo available. Most importatnly, they are a blast to shoot. Lots of guns are fun to shoot, but most are cost prohibitive. These two are not. I love em.

    Rugster I want to use it when I go hog hunting, coyotes, and some occasional plinking. I want .223, 7.62x39, or .308 because ammo is readily available for next to nothing.

    Look around for a used Mini-14 or 30. I've seen some M1 Carbines here and there for under $400. The CETME's that century arms makes are a steal at $300. Maybe a used FAL type rifle. Those Romanian AK's are in that price range. Also those EAA Saiga's are in that price range. SKS's are readily available for well under $400. I picked one (Norinco) up not to long ago for $125 and then had a buddy offer me $250 for it so I sold it to him. I don't think your going to have any luck picking up an AR in that price range unless you get really lucky.

    "...Century Arms ..." They're QC is iffy at best. Unreliable junk at worst. They're parts guns that get no QC.
    Darrell2k3, the 20 round mag requirement limits what you can buy. All the pre-ban/post-ban crapplola. And it depends on what kind of hog. Ground hogs or pigs? The Mini-14 isn't accurate enough in my mind. Neither is an SKS, but a lot of guys have found them ok.
    I'm partial to the M1 Carbine, if you can find a 30 round mag that works. Mine does. Tweak the mags lips open a tick. No Universals. They're not reliable enough. Plainfields or USGI only. Carbine prices vary incredibly from place to place. $400 is considered a good buy anywhere for a shooter carbine. Only use handloads though. No ball for hunting anything but ground hogs.
    Look at the Norincos rifles too. I'm hearing they're ok.

    I'm happy with the Cetme for the price ($275). I've also been eyeing the Saiga in .308 which new is cheaper than a Cetme (refurbished). I don't know how they shoot though.

    If you want accuracy stay away from the mini 14, the best you'll do is 6" to 8" groups at 100yds. for a grab off the rack empty the mag type of gun at the fox that just run off with your prize layin hen it's ok, but there are better choices out there.

    the problem with the mini 14 has to do with the way the gas system is set up on the rifle in relation to the barrel. I've seen alot of them at our club and they all shoot those loose groups.

    For me I want an inche or better at 100 yards!

    Basically, you not going to find what you want in your price range. I didn't even see that you were looking for something "Accurate" enough for shooting ground hogs. Even in a bolt gun you'll spend more than that for ground hogs. Now for Hogs pretty much anything we suggested would suffice. For coyote's you'll be ok. But for ground hogs, your SOL.

    Accuracy is that key phrase that makes that adds the zero behind the dollar sign. I figure, generally, for a full rig, optics included, to score and inch at 100yds, you need to spend $1000. Now thats just generally. I'm sure people have done it for cheaper, but I don't think unless your really lucky, that you'll be able to.

    The FRENCH MAS, is a very good shooter, but be sure your Dealer keeps the Ammo in stock. Should come in about $300.00 or maybe less, check with "Southern Ohio Guns" - SOG.

    Yeah, but doesnt the MAS shoot something like 7.5 ammo? Last time i looked that ammo is really really hard to find and when you do its really expensive. Please correct me if im wrong!
