High Standard .22 short
Here is a tough one fellows. I have my Dad's HS .22 Field King that shoots shorts. Before he died he told me that you could replace the slide and barrel and shoot .22 long rifle. I have found a .22 lr barrel. Is changing the slide mandatory? If it is, does anyone know where I might find a slide?

yes....short slides are made of alloy. a 22 short wont cycle a steel slide. its too heavy. what version field king is it? 101?102?103? etc...the ole standby @gunparts.com has a lot of parts for that gun. i use to sit on a chair in gunparts and spend the day searching in the back looking over h/s parts in the good ole days. (i knew the folks well.)

How do I determine the model number of my sport king (102 /103 / ect.)? I have never noticed any of those numbers on the frame or slide.

look on the slide. is there a series i.d.? it should say....101 or 102 or 103 etc... on the slide.
is it a new haven built gun or hamden?0 -

It is a 102! Been shooting that thing and cleaning it all my life and never noticed that number there before, jeez.
Anyway, I will try your suggestion at gunparts.com. I suppose since I will have to replace slide and barrel that the magazine will have to change as well. Any other suggestions on who might have those parts and how much they should run (just the ball park), would be welcome. Thanks for the info. and BTW; Have you ever felt a better factory trigger than on those old HS auto pistols?

a slide may go for 59.95 and up, stripped. youll need all the guts too. ask them for a complete slide. 22 short mags are pricey. expect them to start around 35.00 and they may go to 49.00. you see them on ebay all the time. stay away from the old 102 mags in the 'white.' buy the blued ones. the old ones had a tendency to swell from corrosion at the feed lips without blueing. 102's are good guns.... hamden guns. those triggers are great! they only get better when the grade of gun goes up. i think youll find the models with over travel screws on the triggers are the best. the tournament is the first model with them.
just a professional note....the hassle its gonna cost you get that thing to shoot 22 short isnt worth it. i'd keep the 22 lr intact, sell the 22 short bbl and buy a complete 22 short hi standard! just my opinion. otherwise, it sounds like a good winter cabin project! good luck! i use to pay smiths to drill and cut steel slides down to 22 short slide weights. theyd look like swiss cheese. pricey, but it worked. if you cant find an alloy slide, buy a steel one and ask a smith with hi standard experience willing to do it on this forum! if you dont mind recycling each round by hand, fire away with your 22 short bbl when you get your 22 short mag. stay in touch! jim spacek is a hi standard collector here in conn.. he has a website. do a google search on jim spacek. email him with you needs. he may have it ready to go. tell em bobski from seymour sent you and he'll fix you up. btw...i had family in the old hi std factory and i know bob shea personally. you hit pay dirt posting here! hamden is only 8 miles from my home.
btw...dont ever dry fire that gun without a slide or bbl. youll crack the frame.

The pistol is already fires shorts! I need the slide and barrel to get it to fire long rifle. I want to shoot in the league at the local NRA range this winter. I could shoot it with shorts, God knows its more than accurate enough! However, It is almost as easy getting a new slide, barrel, mag, combo in .22lr as it is getting another two or three magazines for the shorts.
Thanks for the advice on dry firing. Did not know that.

gessh, you caught me sleeping! i see now! ok....man, stay with 22 shorts if youre gonna shoot league! there is absolutley no difference. shooting 22 short for as long as you have and switching to 22 lr, will be like going from bb gun to 12 ga shotgun! youll develop a flinch! ok, 22 lr slide it is. call jim spacek or call gunparts. they got them out there somewhere! ok!? and dont dry fire your gun w/o a dummy cartridge in your bbl either. look at the 2 or 4 oclock position on your bbl chamber. is there a tick mark where the firing pin hit it? let it happen enough and it will distort your chamber to a point that a bullet wont feed or eject! look at your spent cartridges. is there a scratch mark on them? that would be casued by the dent in the chamber wall. let me know!

and one more thing....when you order your slide, 102(1958) and 103(1960) slides should both work on your frame. dont buy the 104 slide! it had major changes to the recoil block shape and wont cycle. and if you really are going to shoot league with 22lr, buy a 102/103 tournament slide with an adjustable rear sight. it should go right on your frame. they all were the same for the most part. the tournament slide has a wider sight dovetail than a field king. correct me if im wrong...your 22 short is fixed sights? and look at your 22lr bbl. does the front sight attach with an allen screw? what kind of bbl is it? 6 3/4 tapered? 5 1/2" bull? 7 1/4" fluted? if so, you need to buy the correct front blade to match the correct rear sight for correct 'height.' with a fixed rear sight, the notch is lower. if you put a fixed rear sight on a bbl with a high front blade for adjustable sights, youre not going be able to hit anything without cutting the front blade down to raise p.o.i.! follow me? btw...if this thread gets locked out at 10 posts, post again on a different subject line on hi standard and i'll see it and i'll stay with you thru this operation! 0 -

I looked for the "ping" on the chamber and sure nuff, there it was. Fortunately it is not pronounced but, I sure won't be dry firing it again. Question is; How do you relieve the firing pin? I am thinking a spent shell case turned to an undented spot? Thanks again for all the help and suggestions, when I get to the ordering of parts I will hit you up again to make sure I have got it right. I have a picture of my Dad holding a mess of head-shot squirrels and that pistol hanging off his hip, (he was 67). I also have a memory of him shooting a bunny on run from on top of a pile of brush. I won a Patton match and a post EIC match in the Army but on my best day was never as good as he was.

im not sure i know what you mean as far as relieving the firing pin. help me on that. if you put an empty case in your gun, you can dry fire, just rotate the case until no rim is left unhit. then, throw it away. or, just buy some plastic dry fire cases. on the ding....you might want to have a smith squeeze that ding back in. the biggest mistake many people do is go in there and file the ding area out smooth. bad move. it leaves a hole in the rim and it causes the 22 casing to sink too far when struck, leading to misfires and extraction problems. there is a special tool that expands inside the chamber, pushing the metal back into place. ask a 22 smith here on the sight. word it...." any 22 pistolsmith's out there? i need help!" and ask them if they have that tool and what its called. brownells gun tool catalog may have it. go to www.brownells.com. i just cant remember what it is~! sounds like that gun is real special. i'd love to see a pic of your dad and his bunnies! if you can send one, do so! eic match huh? gold silver or bronze? good for you! i legged out (distinguished) on the 45 pistol on the navy team. love that 45! ok, stay in touch, if you want to email me to save having to post here, have at it. im away from my diagrams. i'll make it a point to bring them to conn next trip to va., so i can talk you thru a hi std dysection! nec9554@juno.com. good luck! now...dont forget the question on what kind of 22lr bbl you have! 0
