ammo for Colt Lighting

I have a 1897 Colt Lighting in Ex. cond. 38 cal.
What kind of ammo can I safely shoot in it and where do I get it.

  Depends if your Lighting is the Medium or Large Frame Model. The more common Medium Frame is chambered for the 38-40 cartridge which is reasonably available. Whereas the Large Frame Lighting is chambered for the 38-56 cartridge, which will be difficult to acquire as it's a semicustom loading now.

  Aare you asking about a Lightening Revolver or Lightening Rifle? If it is the pistol, the caliber is .38 Colt. If it is the rifle, then Rufe-Snow's response is correct. I believe the .38 Colt is also the cartridge that Cartaridges Of The World lists as the .38 Long Colt. It is long obsolete but may be available from dealers in obsolete cartridges. Don't shoot .38 Special in the revolver.

  we make the .38 long colt ammunition here in house. we can customize the load to you own specifications. i just loaded up a box of 50 rounds for my own personal use, a duplicate of the original loading but slightly hotter. (158 gr lead round nose with 3.9 grains of SOLO 1000) i will be firing it out of a rolling block carbine. we make the brass out of .38 special cases, and can occaisionaly obtain correct headstamped brass.
