shipping a rifle for repair?
I think I know the answer but I just want to make sure. If I send a rifle in to have muzzle break work done, do I need an FFL to ship or can I just put "for repair or trade" on the package and mail it myself via UPS? Appreciate the help, Thanks.

Just go down to your local wrap and pack and ship it through Fed Ex.. I have a pistol right now being refinished and that's how I did it.. As long as the place you're sending it to has an ffl you're ok.. Andy 0 -
Andy is correct; you can ship a firearm directly to any repair facility if they have an FFL or manufacturers license, & receive it back from them. However, federal law prohibits any marking on the package that identifies it as a firearm. If you use a common carrier (FEDEX or UPS), federal law requires that you inform the carrier that your package contains a firearm, & you must request an "Adult signature required" sticker.
The best (cheapest) way to ship a rifle (or shotgun) is by USPS. If you use a common carrier, you must ship from a carrier customer service counter, not a contract store. (I'm not saying that this has never been done; I'm saying that this is against carrier rules and if a firearm is lost/damaged, it's unlikely you will collect insurance.)
If you use a common carrier, UPS (despite the poor way that they treat customers) is the best choice. FEDEX requires ALL firearms be shipped by Next Day Air, which will easily cost $50 or more.

Some folks ship them as golf clubs. Not saying it is legal or proper, but that way the shippers employees are not focused on a nice firearm for their very own.

Perfectly legal if shipping to an FFL, but you can forget about any insurance claims.0
