7mm bullet type
Just purchased a Ruger 7mm mag. Going hunting for mule deer this fall and was wondering what bullet and grain weight have hunters had good experience with on deer. Thanks in advance for the information.

In addition to the Federal loading (and, a very good one, BTW), you might consider the Hornady Heavy Magnum with the 162 gr Innerbond SP. Hornady makes some extremely accurate ammo with excellent velocity.

I think the 140 grain Nosler Partition would be an ideal match for the game you are looking at using it for.

All suggestions are excellent. I have had good success with Hornady and Nosler and flyers with a couple of other brands, BUT that was in my '58 Husky -06.
My suggestion is to take the advice given in this forum, from those that know at the local gun shop, buy a box of every shell you would like to test and head for a DAY on the range.
Just bear in mind that a HOT barrel may have a different point of impact than a cold barrel. Take your time, place your shots and take notes on each brand of shell and shooting range conditions. This will be your ballistic bible for your Ruger.

150gr balistic tip from federal premium loadings or the 165sst from hornady loadings. The balistic tips,..out to 400yds from a 7mm mag are a no-brainer. I have yet to see anything get up after being struck by these. I shoot them on crop damage hunts at anywhere from 325yds and out,....the exit looks like someone shot them with an RPG!!! And to top it off,..they are very accurate.
Your mileage may vary,....but my experience has been exceptional.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

I have good luck on mule deer using the Honaday 140 gr and 154 grain bullets at max velocity.

Any of the above will do quite well.
Taken deer with both 140 & 154 grain bullets.
Many a Muley's been dropped by the 270 Win, with a 139-140 gr. bullet.
7mm RMag has quite a bit more power.
Save $$$$, by passing on exotics, and boattail bullets.

Just about anything will do from Whitetail to Mule. I tend to favor the Speer Nitrex 140, the 170 is a little too much, unless the Game is chasing you.
I have a friend loading the Hornady 120 Ballistic Tip; and everyone shooting his load swears by them. I personally haven't tried them but I am not much of a 7mm Mag Man. I don't care for Blowing Shoulders off, or destroying meat. I do know that a well placed shot with a 120 grain 25-06 is sufficent to drop a Large Muley in his tracks. If I were to use the 7mm Mag, I'd probably use the 120 Hornady moving fast enough to explode after entrance, does not require a perfect heart shot to turn the heart to Jelly. [;)]

Lazzeroni makes a Lazzerhead bullet in a 120 grain for a 7mm that is superb. It is expensive but if you hand load and want the best, then this is it. I had a load done for my Sako Warbird using a 150 grain lazzerhead and it shoots 3 shots in the same hole at 3700+ fps. The weight retention is around 95% so you can have a flat shooting bullet while retaining a lot of energy. Go to www.lazzeroni.com for details.

You might want to try Remington's 150 grain PSP Corelokt or the Nosler Ballistic Tips in 150 are accurate and very deadly. If those don't shoot good enough for you go with 00scoots suggestion and enjoy a day at the range! Just my opinion. 0 -
Like alaskaman said the remington are good enought. shot many large deer with them and all were one shot kills, makes jelly of the vitals. My 2 Cents worth. 0
