.44 Special
Does anyone have the ballistics on the .44 special or any experience on the effectiveness of this round compared to more popular rounds such as the .45 and .357 mag? Any information would be much appreciated.

What is a .44 Special comparable to? How does it differ from a .44 Magnum? Is that caliber readliy available?

38 special is to a .357 mag. as a .44 special is to a .44 mag., much lighter loading, ammo is available but not as readily as a .44 mag. still one of my favorites. I shoot quite a bit of it in my marlin 1894 and s&w m-624. 0 -
.44 special is ballistically very similar to .45 ACP. It's much less popular than any of the semi-auto cartridges, but it's out there and available. Great fun to punch paper with too. 0 -
44 magnum is nothing but the 44 special on steroids. The case was lengthened (just like the 357) so you wouldn't put the high pressure loads in the older weaker guns. The 44 special is one of my favorites. I shoot it out of a mod 24 and it is accurate and more than powerful enough for personal defence when loaded with Quik-Shoks or silver tips without the excessive recoil of a magnum.

Hello, I just shot my .44 Special for the first time today. About the same as my .45ACP, maybe a little bit more kick. That reminds me, I should go shooting again tomorrow.

I would have to say that the .44spl has a little more "oomph" than a .45acp. For a revolver the .44spl makes a great defensive round. They also make a pretty good target round.

[:D] I shoot .44spl thru a Taurus 445Ti snubby. It is accurate and hard hitting. I buy at gun shows, generally around $25.00/c for new ammo.
A great round IMO. If you have a wheelgun in .44Mag, you can use .44spl for economy.

I had,yup,[:(] HAD,a charter arms bulldog in 44 special.I thought it was an asume little gun,plenty umph to get the job done,recoil not much....I think a lot of it...My 2 cents...... 0 -
I've got a Charter Arms Bulldog in .44spl as well. I love that little gun. For a 2 inch barrel it shoots suprisingly well and more than accurate enough for all your self defense needs. 0 -
It depends on how hot you want to load it.
17.5 grains of 2400 with a Keith 235 grain HPGC bullet will give you 1250fps and 816 ft lbs of energy out of a 4" Charter Arms barrel. The factory load of a 250 grain bullet at 750 fps will give you 312 ft lbs of energy. A lower recoilling target load of 5 grains of Bullseye with a 200 grain bullet will give you a velocity of 825fps and about 300ft lbs of energy. For fun shooting, the lighter bullets are easier on the hand.0 -
44 special is a great round. its just like the 45cp. add me to the list of guys that said that. buy a 44 mag revolver and shoot 44 special in it, and the gun will last forever. 0 -
If you are going to shoot .44 Special in a .44 Magnum, be sure to carefully clean the cylinder chambers after every shooting session. Much like shooting .22 Short or .22 Long in a .22 Long Rifle chamber, or .38 Special in a .357 Magnum chamber, you can score the chamber at a point than is covered by the .44 Magnum brass.
