Pre-1940 Mossberg 22, targeting rifle
Does anyone out there have any information on a pre-1940, military-issue, Mossberg 22 targeting rifle? No visible serial numbers.

Greetings,
To the best of my knowledge, all US military rifles were marked (stamped) "US property", and virtually all rifles had serial numbers. I have seen .22 rifles for sale as "military issue" without being marked, and without serial numbers, and several bona fide collectors have said..... "highly unlikely". Take a look at some of the pics on my FTP sight and see if any pics there look like the rifle you're referring to.

i owned a u.s. marked model 144. it was a smooth gun, in the blue, and, had a heavier stock than most. it had a flaming bomb on the bbl and receiver. many bootcamps used them. many boys clubs/camps got them as they were phased out. matter of fact, i shot a mossberg in rtc san diego. mine did not have a serial number, it just had a part number. they have some collectablity. do you own one?

Mossbergs from the '40s that were used as trainers/target rifles were the models 42M and the 44US. Although commercial Mossberg 22's did not have sn's until mandated by ATF (1968, I think), the military rifles were all serial numbered(in two places)on the receiver and on the bbl.
There may have been a few that slipped through without a number, but it would be very difficult to document this.
Locate the model number (on the bbl), and eMail me direct for further info.
