Best Overall 30-06 Ammo Choice for WhiteTail
I am looking for some advice on the best overall ammunition choice for Whitetail Deer in mixed southern US terrain. Little open long-shot opportunities. Mostly moderate to heavily wooded. Majority of shots less than 100 yds. Rifle will be Remington 7400 semiautomatic, scoped with 1 1/2 x 6. Would appreciate your personal experience responses. Thanks

Any 150 gr softpoint, that reliably feeds and ejects from your rifle should suffice, unless you are in the habit of firing at the north end of southbound bucks. 0 -
I use Federal 165 gr. Nosler BT's. I've shot 4 deer with them, they all went down pretty fast. Shortest shot was about 40 yds, longest 125 yds. 3 were heart/lung shots, the 40 yd. deer I shot in the neck. The bullet does a lot of destruction on what it hits - I've found the heart in pieces on two of them, in one it was just a jellied mass. 0 -
The bullets i use in my rifle for whitetail are Sierra 150 gr Spitzer Boattails... they have never failed me as far as penetration and expansion are concerned... I've shot deer with them from 20 yards to just over 350 yrds... i do all of my own reloading so i'm not sure if they make a factory cartridge with the sierra bullet... out of my remington 700 they are very accurate. my dad and i have used them for years and will probably continue to use them for years to come... hope this helps to answer your question

Everyone knows that the .30-06 is not appropriate for deer of any size. The preferred caliber of choice is the .22LR.[:o)]

When I was growing up in Maine, our next door neighbor was a retired Maine Game Warden. He spent most of his working years in the northern half of Maine....and used to tell us stories about when he worked there. During the depression, the poor folks up there (and most of them were poor) relied on deer meat, year around, to live on.
The Game Wardens understood the situation, and didn't bother them much (especially if they had a family) unless they thought that they were market hunting.
The preferred hunting cartridge was .22LR. It was cheap and didn't make much noise for out-of-season hunting. He said that some of those folks were amazing shots, and one-shot kills were not that uncommon.0 -

I reload the Hornady 165gr spire point with 47.5gr of imr4327 in my 30.06.I have shot whitetail as close as 30 yards and as far as 350 yards and they usually drop on the spot.I am sure some of the 165gr factory loads would work well also. 0 -
Here in MAINE I use 180 grain...softpoints,understand I shoot a 03-a3 springfield bolt.They have never run far,if at allShot placement is important as you can waste a lot of meat. And by the by....22's are still very popular here,go way up into Canada and visit the tribes,to every other caliber there are 10 or more 22's and yes they use em on everthing........ 0 -
The WhiteTail is more or less a Runt of the Deer Family, Florida Key Deer are about equivalent to Texas Whitetail. A goodly size skipper rock in the hand of a hungry West Virginia farm Boy is usually sufficent! In Louisiana; They chase them down with Trucks and knock them in the head with a Coke Bottle (or Jax Beer Can). In Nebraska; they feed them corn, enough that when they founder, they fall of the cornpile and break their necks. Ohio; They shoot Bambi with Shotguns and Bear Balls (slugs) not much meat left but plenty of bragging rights. Tennoceeeians have been known to engage the Deer (elope if you will)? New York: Has had a few Hybrids found running wild on 43st. ( Deer face & Bear Ass).

GoldenDog1 any good 150 or 165 gr is plenty for white tails, the 180gr and heavier slugs really are for bigger stuff like elk or bear0 -
Depends on what you are hunting for. If you are meat hunting use a lighter grain bullet. If you are rack hunting use a heavy grain bullet. At less than 100 yards just about anything out of a 30.06 will do the job. Shot placement will be the key either way. Good luck.
