762x39 steel core
It was my understanding that 762x39 steel core ammo is no longer imported from China and that it is unlawful to sell it but there seems to be some up for auction. Who has the real skinny?

It's my understanding that the stuff that was already in private hands was grandfathered in, it's okay. FFL dealers can't sell it, other folk can. Check out following site:

The steel core ammo was halted from import in 1994 after Olympic Arms made their OA93 AR pistol in 7.62X39. By doing so, they effectively made 7.62X39 into both a rifle and a pistol caliber. Armor piercing rifle ammo is acceptable in certain calibers. However armor piercing pistol ammo is not. The steel core 7.62X39 was known to be armor piercing capable even though it wasn't marked as such. That was okay, until someone made a pistol that shot that caliber. As soon as they did, the ammo was re-classified and was banned from import. Dealers received a notice that they could no longer sell the ammo to the public. They could use it up themselves, sell to law enforcement, or sell for export out of the country, but no more domestic sales. Thanks Olympic.
As for individuals selling it, that really wasn't addressed back in 1994. That notice was addressed to FFL dealers at the time. However if people are commonly selling ammo, not just a one time deal, the gov't might feel they can get nasty with those folks too. Just like the people that are constantly buying and selling guns, but don't have an FFL, the gov't seems to take a dim view of such things.0 -

You are right. Professional Ordnance in Arizona made the .223 cal Ar-15 "type" pistol, and steel core ss109 ammo is still available, along with the "Wolf" russian steel jacketed .223.0 -
I think the one most "famous" is the OA93, OA98 was the post ban, swiss cheesed version.

Interesting theing about the SS109 ammo, at ranges less than around 300 yards, it actually penetrates with lower efficiency than standard military ball. It was designed for increased penetration at longer distances. Could be, that is the reason it isn't considered all that effective in handgun configuration, maybe they figure if it penetrates with less efficiency at typical pistol ranges, they aren't worried about it.

SS109 isn't considered AP even though it has the steel penetrator tip. Unlike some AP, it isn't an all steel core. The Chinese steel core 7.62X39 was an ALL steel core. It went through steel plate like a hot knife through butter. Actually it was more like a carbide drill. It made a perfectly round hole, no dent and then a hole, just a nice hole with the copper jacket pealed off around the hole's edge. Certain AP is acceptable while others are not. For example 50cal BMG and 30-06 AP are okay, but .308/7.62 NATO AP is not.
There was a magazine article back in the late 1980's that compared the 7.62X39 steel core to actual military 7.62 NATO AP. Their results were not what they thought they would be, nor what I would have thought them would be. Given the fact that the 7.62 NATO is both heavier and travelling faster, not to mention that it is officially AP, one would assume it to have good penetration on steel plates. In their testing, for what ever reason, the 7.62X39 steel core standard Chinese surplus ammo penetrated more plates than did the 7.62 NATO AP did. From what I remember, they too were caught somewhat off guard by the results. I don't think they at that time had an answer either.0 -
Most of the 7.62x39 AP, I have had, was Norinco Yellow Box. The Israeli .223 with the green tip, does a pretty good job of Penetration, and can be purchased at most Gun Shows, or the "Knob Creek Shoot".
I have found the FMJ Wolf 7.62x39 will tear a nice hole in our 1/4th" target stands. The .22-250 will shoot a clean hole through 3/8ths. The 35 Remington will shoot a soft nose projectile through 3/8ths with the Plate free standing. I haven't tried it; But I have no doubt the 7.mm Mag, .300 Mag, all of the Ultra Mags, Probably the 25.06 with a light fast bullet, 30-378 Weatherby, .338 Lapua Mag, as well as many others will Penetrate at least 3/8ths Steel. Body Armor is a waste of time when 3500fps comes calling. [xx(]

How weird!
We used the steel core Norinco in the old green boxes to shoot bowling balls; 45-70 did almost as well on the swirly plastic ones, but the Black Beauty balls had a concrete center which was no match for the steelies.

Anybody seen/shot the Czech 7.62X54 steel case with the silver tip? Copper sleeved with a metal tip and metal core. Is this armor piercing ammunition or is it considered military hardball?
