Garand Prices?
It's been a long while since I've perused any gun shops around my home with any M1 Garands in stock. They are usually scarce, but it is not unusual to stumble on to one now and then...at least then.
I was in one of the larger shops in my area a week ago Sunday. They had five Garands in stock. They probably were from a collection that was being liquidated. I didn't ask since I'm not in the market for one and they were pretty busy.
I know from prior experience with these guys; if it's yours...it's junk. If it's theirs...it's a jewel. It's not quite that bad, but it goes something like that. If it's a consignment piece, they usually will not take it if your asking price is unreasonably high.
ANYWAY, I was very surprised to see what I would consider to be fair-to-midland Garands priced at $800-$850! A couple of them would have maybe gone out of the CMP as a "select-grade" at best...maybe? They were not at all "correct"...manufacturer/period or otherwise. I looked a few of them over pretty well and that was my semi-trained observation.
I have seen prices like these before on better pieces, but not like these. Is this the market on these nowadays? I didn't realize they were fetching these prices. One of them was a "Blue Sky."

Not suprising on the price,That is about what they are going for here too in Calif. (mid grade) Glad I got my refubished M1 Grand (a true springfield) for $350 15 years ago! [:)]

The M-1 Garand is a Complete Vocation in itself.
There are some US made Receivers running around now, with Parts from various Mfg. (They are shooters and have been tested) appx $450 in good condition.
An Original WWII vintage will bring $850 if all parts are Original and in Very Good Condition (Cartouches on the stock, etc.) Some Mfg. will bring more than others. And there are times If it doesn't have a Remington Barrel on a Springield Revceiver = It is wrong!
I have had and sold quite a few Garands, including the M-1 D. In the Box, Unfired, with Scope, ect. These NIB will bring $2400 -$2600, and the Original Scope (New Also) will push it up to possibly $4,000.
I did have a Garand from the Brits, British Proofed in LBS. On the Barrel and under the operating handle was "American" in small letters. It had the Everything was Correct, and seemingly Unfired, it also had a Canvas sling marked 1944. This Rifle Brought about $1200, If I recall correctly?
Before Purchasing any Gun you are not Familiar with check with someone Trustworthy that has no stake in the Deal. 1 Little Part wrong Mfg. On the M-1 can cut $100 - $300 off the worth. [;)]

Ever since the Director of Civilian Marksmanship raised the limit on M1's from "one per lifetime" to "no more than approximately 5 per year", they have become more readily available at guns shops & shows. The prices for service grade rifles is usually in the $500-600 range, with those fresh-from-rebuild going maybe $100 more. CA is one of the few areas where they go for more. "Select grade" rifles don't sell for more, as the only difference is that the Throat Erosion is guaranteed to be < 5, which was usually the case for service grade rifles anyway. Collector grade rifles, which are substantially original WWII or Korean War era rifles, sell in the $1,000-1,500 range. Blue Sky & other import marked rifles sell in the $350-500 range.
So, fort knox, I think that the main reason that gun shop has 5 in stock is that they are overpriced.

Haven't seen ANY garands go around here for less than 800.00 no matter what they were......just my 2 cents..... 0 -

I believe you must be either join your state rifle association & do a CMP shoot or be prior service & part of your state rifle association to qualify to buy a CMP garand.
Prices aren't bad!

They all go for at least $850 and up, mostly up, at gun shows. CMP has only Springfield and H&R in service grade at the present time. These have been rebuilt at least once and most have been more. Even the Rack Grade selection, and the Danish selection is meager. Last weekend at a show I heard a dealer complaining that he was having a hard time getting five within a short waiting period. While saying this he was assembling a garand from table parts. His garands were priced from $850 for a dog up to $1100 for a decent looking one that he probably had just put together in his garage.
Glad I got my Winchester, 1.9 TE, when I did.

It is against the CMP rules to buy and resell them like that.

I doubt the guy had an FFL. I referred to him as a "dealer", but I imagine he is like most of the tables rented by individuals.
