This could also be the case of someone not know what their target was when they pulled the trigger. Camo or orange if the person did not know his target and was shooting at something that was moving it is wrong. I happens all the time, people dont know what they are shooting but if it moves it becomes a target. I have read stories of it happening even if if the other hunter had orange, someone saw somehthing move in the trees so they fired. IDIOTS is the best word to describe someone like that.

As a Mn DNR firearms instructor I must say that one of the primary rules of firearms safety is to know your target and what is beyond it.

Not all states have laws requiring hunters to wear some for of blaze orange while hunting small game.

Minnsesota law states that you must have one article of clothing above the waste that is blaze orange, the minimum being an orange hat while hunting small game. Certain types of hunting that require camoflage are exempt from this law such as waterfoul, Turkey and varmit hunting.

Sometimes it is the fault of both the vitim and the shooter as they both failed to follow common sense rules.

Accidents are caused by one of 2 things, IGNORANCE and or CARELESSNESS!

If you ain't got a sense of humor you got no business bein here!

I hope the boy survived with no disability, that he sues for serious $
and that the story gets wide publicity in hunting and shooting magazines. It's not carelessness, it's criminal negligence.
I recall the days before Hunters Orange, being shot at and seeing hunters drinking in the woods.
We're shooting ourselves in the foot if dont police ourselves.

It's been said before but I'll say it again...........KNOW YOUR TARGET positively, absolutely, without question. Anyone who shoots at "movement" in the hunting fields or woods is a complete and utter ASS-CLOWN.

German hunters wear green, brown, or grey. Only on drive hunts do they wear orange and that is just in case the drivers should accidently get in line with game and the shooters. Hunting accidents are rare as hens teeth because they are taught to identify the target before putting a finger on the trigger and I mean IDENTIFY. They should not only know the species but the sex, and if it is sick, to identify the probable cause of sickness. And this does not even cover judging the score of the trophy while it is on the hoof!
Bottom line. Many hunters simply do not identify the target. But lets not stop there. Why should we not also be able to call our shots? If each hunter could call his or her shot, identification of the target would be elementary to pulling the trigger. It just makes sense to take the time and observe the game and decide where and when you want to pull that trigger and exactly where you want that bullet to impact to make a clean kill. Additionally, how many of us think about where these bullets go when they exit the amimal?

With 270 Million People, I would assume: If they all had knives = Someone would get CUT! 80,000 suicides a year far exceeds Accidents and Homicide, still is a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of people involved. The NEWS MEDIA has something to get their Teeth Into, while the Idiots in Hollywood shoot 30 people per person - per Movie, while expecting their Acting/Actions not to effect anyone?

Now! Certain Elements are Blaming the "GUN" for Suicides, I would come nearer blaming The Pressure Society has put on people and the Thousands of Requirements to be delt with on a Daily Basis.

It is a shame people die; So? People have always died and I must assume always will die, by Automobile, Drowning, Insect Bites, AIDS, etc. etc, So! Where is the Shame of dying in Combat over a War not ment to win? or too "Free The Iraqis"?
BACK to the Main Point: man has been searching to find a cure for Ignorance many a moon, so far we haven't found it but atleast we have it Isolated; but thriving with the Liberals. [xx(]

In NM, we call those "hunters" that won't take the care to look beyond their target, or verify that what they are shooting is, indeed a game animal, or that take "sound shots" TEXANS.
It's a dam* shame that some beer-swilling, couch-imprinting, hunt-from-the-truck bed, wouldn't-know-a-deer-from-a-beer swine are out there wounding and killing others; I always report such behavior via cellphone or radio to the authorities!
On occasion (and only when they're threatening my well-being or others hunting with me), I have scared them back to their camps with well-aimed and thoughtfully placed tracers, tennis balls, and golf balls. Then we leave it up to Game & Fish to decide who is a drunken menace, and who should be hunting.

If you know it all; you must have been listening.WEAR EAR PROTECTION!

Warcrob...."Minnsesota law states that you must have one article of clothing above the waste that is blaze orange....."

Does that apply to horses too? I'm referring, of course, to the 12 year old girl that had a horse shot out from under her in Minn-eeeee-sota recently. [;)]

The blaze orange law only applize to those in the field hunting. The case you are referring to in which the girl's horse was shot while she was riding it. The shooter was an elderly man in his late 70's or 80's whose eyesight was extremely impared.
I believe the horse died, I don't remember all the details but there was talk across the state among hunters following the incident to take up a collection to buy the young lady another horse.
Some people are so intent on bagging thier deer they lose a common sense. It's to bad because it makes the rest of us look like trigger happy slobs.
