Commercial Mauser SIMSON & CO w/British Proofs
I have a commercial Mauser which is an old Gew 98 that was sporterized and marked on the receiver ring SIMSON & CO, SUHL 1916 - the middle of WWI. I am wondering if anyone knows the production of commercial/sporting rifles like this during the war. As I understand, commercial rifle production at Oberndorf ceased during the war for war production. What is also very interesting about this rifle is that it is fully British Proofed and marked CORDITE with the load range. Is it likely this found its way to Great Britain after WWI?? Simson didn't export sporters to Britain during the war did they?? The British were fighting the Germans then, but I do know the British loved the Mauser 98. The rifle appears fully original. Both the barrel and receiver are British proofed, as is the bolt and other various small parts throughout. Any other thoughts or insight would be appreciated.

This is a quote from "RIFLES OF THE WORLD" by John Walter. "Simson & Company of Suhl, appointed prime contractor to the German army in the immediate post-1919 period, is said to have completed some Gew. 98 actions in sporting-rifle form.
Not withstanding the chamber date on your rifle, I believe the above quote would substantiate your rifle as being of post W W I production.0
