If the cartridges you are wanting to interchange have the same rim then you can swap calibers easily with a change of the barrels and/or magazines, although mag changes are not always necessary. If they don't have the same size rim it requires a different ejector which requires a different slide.

The magic word here is conversion barrel.
Yes the 357sig conversion barrel will fit your particular 40S&W Glock.
You can't simply assume that Glocks 357sig barrel will fit correctly due to differences in the lugs. There are aftermarket barrels for that purpose. Also, using a 357sig conversion barrel in a 40S&W Glock you do not need to change out the extractor or ejector. You can also use your 40S&W magazine for them.
Yes, There are 9mm conversion barrels available for your Glock.
In order to shoot 9mm for a 40S&W Glock it is advisable to purchase a 9mm magazine to properly feed it. If you use this configuration for target shooting or plinking, nothing else need be done.
If you intend to use this configuration for self defense then yes, you will need to change out the extractor and ejector.
I have shot 9mm out my G35 with the conversion barrel and 9mm magazine and had no failure to feed or eject.

I think owning a gun doesn't make you a killer, it makes you a smart American.

Hey joey garza! As a Police Officer, F.B.I. Certified Firearms Instructor and Certified Glock Factory Armorer I would not advise you to do it. The flip side of this is that me and some of the other firearms instructors got together and wondered about the same thing. We took a Glock 22 and put a Glock 17 barrel in it and used a 22 mag. The outcome was suprising. The Glock .40 performed perfectly with only a barrel change and nothing else. Would I carry this for self-protection? NO WAY! If your just curious or wanted to try it I can understand that. As Flatlander03 leaded to about changing the extractor and ejector, well it will still work, but the milled out section of the slide is still bigger to accomodate the larger shell. Just do it for fun if you do and not to save your life. 0
