SA made 6 different gas cylinders, and 3 of them are unmarked.

You might want to buy "M1 Garand 1936 to 1957" by Poyer & Riesch. If you are looking at a specific M1, and want to know what is correct, you will need to give me the serial #.

I concur with Neal-- at this point you need to break down and purchase some refernce material. The quick way to spot the differences between Winchester gas cylinders and WWII SA is to look at the rear ring; If it has a flat on the top it is SA and if it is rounded then its is a Winchester. The width of the front sight base also varies with the date of manufacture.

Thank you gentlemen for you help. I have a couple of books enroute which should aid the process.

I concur: There are some Springfield Gas Cylinders marked s, some are marked sa, most are not marked. [;)]
